How do you modify the Fallout.ini configuration file now?
The ini file is set to Read Only so I reconfigure the file properties and turn off Read Only. Then I discover that any change I make to the file gets undone the next time I launch the game (the game also marks the file as Read Only again).

This seems to be caused by the recent release of the game. I am playing the GOG version but I suspect the same thing has happened to the Steam release.

Edit: It seems the game is overwriting fallout.ini on each bootup of the game. FalloutPrefs.ini however is not and can be freely edited.

Current work around is to modify the Security Permissions for the file and remove Modify and Write permissions for every account. This will stop the game from replacing the file/undoing your changes.

Basically these steps:

1) Locate your Fallout.ini file.
2) Right click it and select Properties.
3) Disable Read Only and apply the change.
4) Open the INI file apply your desired changes. Save the changes.
5) Repeat Steps 1 & 2.
6) Select the Security tab.
7) Select Advanced.
8) Disable Inheritance. Select the top option when prompted and then Okay to close this Advanced window. (Skip this step if Inheritance is already disabled)
9) Edit each Group or Username and remove the Modify and Write permissions (only the "Read & Execute" and "Read" permissions are allowed). Apply the changes.

10) Play the game.

If you are using MO2 (which you should be, if you are running mods), that will take care of everything for you, including maintaining its own version of the inis.
