Mouse Acceleration Fix
Hello All,

The steps found on many of the guides to fix the mouse acceleration problem were not working for me. I was able to find a fix that did work on the Bethesda website and I figure I should put it here for easy access. I'll also attach the link at the bottom if you want to go directly to the source.

First, go to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas"

Second, open the file "fallout_default.ini". if many just be "fallout_default" on your computer.

Third, find the "bBackground Mouse = 0" line and change the "0" to "1". Just use control f to search for it as there is a lot in this file. It should look like this...

bBackground Mouse = 1

Fourth, underneath "bBackground Keyboard = 1" add a few lines of information. It should look like this...

bBackground Keyboard = 1
fForegroundMouseAccelBase=0
fForegroundMouseAccelTop=0
fForegroundMouseBase=0
fForegroundMouseMult=0

Agian, use the control f to search and find. It will be below the "bBackground Mouse" line.

Finally, search and find "iPresentInterval=1" and change the "1" to "0". It should look like this...

iPresentInterval=0

Now just save and close the file and run the game. It also suggjests that if this does not work, delete the "fallout_default.ini file. Then run the game as a new file will be automatically created. Then try these steps again.

Here is the link to the original website...

I hope this helps!

I appreciate your post, Wilfrid - other fixes I've seen only included adding the 4 "fForegroundMouse" lines, which alone did not work for me. Adding the two other parameter changes you outline did the trick!!

Two comments:
1) you have a typo in the first "fForegroundMouceAccelBase=0" line. "Mouce" should be "Mouse".

2) if you also make all of the changes you've specified to C:\Users\"user name"\Documents\My Games\FalloutNV in both Fallout.ini and FalloutPrefs.ini, you will likely avoid having any issue with the edits getting to where they actually need to be.

Thanks again :steamthumbsup:

This doesn't work at all. I've seen this solution everywhere. Why is it perpetuated? It doesn't work! I don't understand why. I want to know why. How I can ACTUALLY fix this issue?

As I recall, fallout_default.ini is by default set to “read only”, so this property must be changed for any edits to stick. It is also possible you may not have proper (i.e. administrator) rights to edit the file if your Steam install directory is on your system C:\ drive. For what it’s worth, my Steam installs are on a separate, dedicated & high speed drive so permissions are no issue. After you’ve edited all 3 files (fallout_default.ini, fallout.ini and falloutprefs.ini), close them and reopen them to double check the edits are still there. Perhaps you’ve already done these things but I wish you luck, regardless. Removing the mouse acceleration never worked for me until I followed all of the steps here and it really did make game navigation much more controllable.

This is seriously a damn pain just to get it started. I do not even have all of these files.

I also do no not have these files. Only fallout_default. Who thought mouse acceleration was a good idea? Damnit

I FIGURED IT OUT. Mod Organizer 2 makes its own .ini files for the game and they are located in C:\Modding\MO2\Profiles\Default. These are the files which require editing. Only adding the four parameters did not do it so I have done all the steps in the OP for both Fallout.ini and FalloutPrefs.ini. Again, located in the Mod Organizer folder.

Now my mouse accell is finally disabled. Hallelujah. What a crappy idea that was.

You don't need to locate them. Click the "edit inis" button in MO2.

this is every bit as handy and even more convenient. just select Tools, then INI Editor.

Thank you so much! I think you should submit this on PC Gaming Wiki because the "fix" that is shown there does NOT work. I would do it but I don't think I can give credit, on the site itself, for what you found. This needs to be more visible.
