Restricted areas? (spoilers?)
I'm just wandering around as a wasteland barbarian with ED-E and Boone, as one does. I saw a power plant and went to explore it... only to find it appeared to be empty. Then I saw a little shack nearby, and wandered over to see if there was loot inside.

Immediately, NCR troopers came storming out and shooting at us, which caused Boone to murder them all as I hid behind a rock. Boone then ran over and told me he wouldn't work with me anymore since I'd killed the NCR. What???

I looked it up and apparently this is a "shoot on sight" area for the NCR. So I had to reload an old save and stay the hell away from that area. So without spoiling too much, is there some way for me to have known to avoid that place? Is there a list of dangerous faction places? No NPC warned me to leave before they started shooting or anything. Just came out guns blasting.

The area was El Dorado Substation, I think, next to... Helios One or something? Maybe I'm missing something? I just reloaded an old save before they started shooting and fast traveled away. An NCR trooper at Helios One didn't care when I walked by, so I'm not hated or vilified with the faction or anything.

Alternatively, if NPCs I want to be friendly with start shooting me, is there a way to halt the fight? Just let them kill me / reload an old save?

Yeah, el dorado substation should normally have an NCR soldier coming up to you telling you to stay out of the enclosure and the control room or they are ordered to shoot on sight.

Huh. So it's a bug? I was in the enclosure for a good 2-3 minutes and nobody cared, but once I approached the shack it was kill on sight.

I just did the quest inside the power plant (That Lucky Sun? or something) and when I exited the building, which was full of NCR, I was immediately attacked... by the NCR. I guess the door I exited was in a restricted area, but the door I entered was not... So when I exited the safe way, then tried to come in through the "front door", they told me I wasn't allowed in. To the power plant I just repaired. Very strange.

For the Helios one powerplant you just need to get permission from the lady out front and you should be fine.
A speech or science of 30 should get you in.
Or being liked enough by the NCR will also do it.

Yeah, but I had no way of knowing that... They started shooting the moment they saw me. :P

How would you have no way of knowing that?
She's always standing right in front of the only entrance.
The other entrance is locked and clearly marked for trespassing in red...

Well, an NCR guard watched me walk through the door, then an NCR guard was on the other side of the door and said "Hey, how ya doin?"
Nobody said "You shouldn't be here!" or anything.
It's also, quite clearly, not the "only entrance" if you immediately bring up the 2nd entrance...
