It's a cumulative effect from being in radioactive areas. Rads value has no effect until it reaches 200 rads - from that it'll start to decrease you stats such as endurance, strength etc. You can remove it by applying RadAway, you can also increase your resistance to radiation by using Rad-X.

Go into your pip boy and in the status effects where the hunger/thirst and all that, there's a radiation tab and you can see your current rad level.

Radiation doesn't go down by itself, and once it reaches the end of the bar, you die. And yeah there are progressively worse detrimental effects for the stages of radiation poisoning, I believe every 200 points.

Doctors will cure it to 0 for 50 caps, or you use radaway to heal it. Radx and radiation suits (or armour with rad resistance) is what you wanna use when you go into places that give high amounts of radiation.

a toxic element radiated from a source. They slowly make the player sick, but it can be reversed. The element should be nuclear waste and fallout hinted by the nuclear powered vehicles and bombs.

I don't really remember, I think they just lower stats and add or increase handicaps. Should show you on your pip boy.

Going into irradiated areas will increase your rads over time, certain thresholds give bigger and bigger debuffs until 100% when you just die.

Rads can be lowered/ removed by visiting a doctor or using Radaway. Rads can also be mitigated ahead of time by using rad resistant armour/ clothes or taking Rad-X.

Alternatively there are actually some perks that can make having radiation sickness come with some upsides like higher health regeneration and such.

When u get 1 rad you dye instantly. If you have -1 rads the vault boy will come and eat you. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the nightmares.

It takes 1000 rads to kill you, this game is pretty scarce on radiation as a worry but there are a few areas that have high radiation.

You won't encounter highly irradiated places you want to explore all that often, but when you do- You'll generally want some protection against the radiation, and a way to lower it your radiation is getting too high.

As people said, get clothes/armor with radiation suits to help out, and stack up on rad-x/rad-away. Don't be afraid to back out from an area to go to a doctor for healing if need be. I recall a moment where I left a place after being on 999 rad :steamfacepalm:

feral?

Not immediately, becoming feral takes time, more so if around other people. But eventually you'll turn and eat your neighbor.
