For the first playthrough, take ammo and meds/chems, and pick up weapons or outfits you might use. If the weapons or outfits aren't an upgrade or useful for repairs or a disguise, drop them. Most miscellaneous or junk items don't need to be picked up unless they are for a specific quest or task. I also recommend carrying at least one melee weapon and a few different ranged weapons for situation or ammo variety until you become more experienced with the game.

You can sell them, though some items can be made into more valuable items at crafting stations. You can also make ammo, but that mostly uses its own components like gunpowder and casings.

Honestly unless it's chems, ammo, weapons/ armour you plan on using or for repairs (or high value to sell next store you see) don't bother picking it up.
Most items are worthless and can be left alone, basically all the junk items, food/ drink unless in hardcore mode (which honestly sucks), and all that sort of stuff don't even bother picking up to begin with.

Some items can be used for crafting, but crafting is fairly worthless outside of ammo crafting (and even ammo crafting is just a luxury and can be entirely ignored without consequence) and ammo has it's own components which are weightless that you can only get from breaking down ammo (without mods).

Basically unless you plan on using the item or it has high value for selling it's best to just leave it.

Don't hesitate to sell the miscellaneous items you loot from the game. In early hours from start, we cannot craft things that much. Some of them still need recipe, skill level or other ingredients etc. Many junks and scraps can be found all around the wasteland so if you need them later, just search for them again is ok.

If you new to fonv I'd like to advise to look closely to the money (caps) in the shop owner. They will pay the caps they have at that time. Even you sell a super expensive set of loot but if the shop have only 300 cap, you will get only 300 and end the deal.

Pick up low weight high value items, like cigarette cartons for example. That will help you make some extra cash in the long run. Ammo is weightless as long as you are not playing on hardcore, basically free caps, collect all ammo and sell the ones you don't intend to use.

Armor most of the time isn't worth it to pick up unless you can repair your own with it, too heavy most of the time, even basic leather armor is 15 lbs.

you should always take ammo, stimpacks, Radaway, Bobby Pins, chems, and pre-war money since they're all weightless and even if you don't intend to use them you can still sell them. Sunset Sasparilla you should pick up when you find a full bottle... But don't leave it be if you're overencumbered just drink it to get a free bottle cap or the chance of a star cap.

A fair chunk of the miscelenious crap you find on the ground is mostly useless though some stuff can be used in recipes. Scrap metal is probably the most "useful" junk you can find since you can bring it to a workbench to convert into lead for ammo crafting.

I'm repeating what a bunch of people said, but I think most of the people who answered were missing the picture.

First thing's first: pick up what you need. Like so many others have said, pick up anything weightless, as most of those items you'll be using a lot of (ammo and stimpaks in particular), not to mention how fast items add up, which can be used for crafting or selling. Compare in your inventory what guns and armor are better than others, and make sure to pick of duplicates of guns and armor, as you'll be wanting to repair your stuff often. After that, the bulk of what you pick up is going to be sold later. The majority of the items that you'll be in need of are sold at vendors, so what looting really comes down to is: how much money are your items worth? So instead of thinking that junk is useless, or that you should avoid this or take that, think about how much you'll be making from your inventory.

It's real simple what you need to do: you want the items with the highest weight-to-value ratio. Say you find a junk item weighs 20 lbs and is worth 60 caps. Weight-to-value would be 3 caps for every 1 lb. Now say you find a gun or something that weighs five lbs and is worth 100 or so caps. Weight-to-value would be around 20 caps per lb, so you should take items like that which make the most out of your storage space.

After a while, looting this way will become pretty useless (especially after you play the Dead Money DLC) because you'll be swimming in caps, but I don't want to spoil the fun for you later. Once you get past this point in understanding, try using your own judgement as much as you can when playing. If you continue to follow guides whenever you hit a roadblock, it gets pretty easy to de-personalize your game experience.

after many years, I just got back into the fallout series. It puts a smile on my face to know there's an active community of players. probably partially thanks to Paul, from mitten squad.

wow thanks for all the answers guys, for what i get i should get weapons and armor duplicate, ammo, ammo casing for crafting more ammo, any weightless stuff like stimpacks, low wg and high val like cigarettes, money to be sold, sunset sasparilla, and anything that i need for the time. I'm also picking up stuff that can craft weapon repair kit like ducktape, wonderglue and stuff. again, thanks for the answers i appreciate ya'll for using your time to write paragraphs to help me 😄

as we said armor is pretty weighty and generally not worth too much. Granted in some places you can find some dead Brotherhood of Steel people that have T51b armor... Always take power armor because it's power armor and having a full health set is a nice boon even if it takes a while to be able to wear it... Additionally Combat Armor sells pretty well too

I actually haven't seen much of a shift after that video came out. I've been playing New Vegas consistently for years and the community's always been going strong

Actually, I take back partially what I said. Now that I think about it, one thing that I have noticed recently is the influx of new players, so maybe the video had something to do with that. But that's the only shift I've seen in the steam community hub.

Never heard of either of them, if anything Hbomber on youtube would be responsible for the most recent influx due to his recent video, but in general NV is just a really good game and enough people talk about it for word to get around.
