Switching Ammo

I'm really confused how you switch ammo in FNV. I have a service rifle, and the following ammo in my inventory:

* 5.56mm round
* 5.56mm, armor piercing
* 5.56mm, hollow point

But I can't get the 5.56 rounds to load. I've gone into the Ammo section of Pipboy and selected them but nothing happened. I've ever dropped all my other ammo and tried to select it.

Press '2' and it should cycle through the different ammo types.
