Using DXVK to gain all the performance and smoothness in new vegas
friends, roman, countrymen, degenerates, lend me your ears

i want to gather other people's experiences here

because i tried this and pretty much coomed instantly

dxvk is a translation layer for directx applications that makes use of the vulkan graphics api

primarily utilized for linux with WINE, it works perfectly well on windows

so here's what you gotta do:

download dxvk-x.x.x.tar.gz from this page: https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/releases

double extract using 7zip until you get the x32/x64 directories

go into x32 and copy d3d9.dll and dxgi.dll to your root new vegas directory where the exes are

if you use enb, you can name the d3d9.dll file from that folder to something like d3d9_dxvk.dll, copy it, then go into enblocal.ini and add the lines

[PROXY]
EnableProxyLibrary=true
InitProxyFunctions=true
ProxyLibrary=d3d9_dxvk.dll

now new vegas should try to auto config new settings because you're changing its render environment, technically

and that is it. it should just work. for me, new vegas ran smoothly for the first time, ever. like before even if i got 60fps, 16.6ms frametime, rock solid, it just didn't *feel* smooth. but now it does. it's a revelation, from the gods themselves.

please try this and give feedback on your experience. i'd like to see if this benefits other people, and how much.

This is great. I have to agree that this is maybe the first time New Vegas feels TRULY smooth. Guess I'll never have to use VATS again.

DXVK breaks fullscreen alt-tabbing and causes the game to crash when you do, so you'll need a borderless window mod of some kind. I think I use some D3D9 Extended thing, forgot what it's from.

Also it seems to slow down over time, so you'll need to restart the game every couple of hours.
Full screen alt tabbing had always been broken anyway, in my experience. :gng:

I think I use onetweak for borderless. Or istewieai tweaks? I don't remember right now if he'd added that, probably not though.

That is awesome, although it didn't increase my fps it got much more smooth, only problem I found is that steam overlay stops working with it
it likely won't provide a significant fps increase unless you're single thread bottlenecked in a specific way. i haven't made an objective measurement as to how much, but it did noticeable increase my average fps in heavily modded freeside/strip open. the globally reduced input lag is also noticeable.

steam overlay is generally hit and miss with vulkan native games, very sketchy with dxvk.
