the only reward for caravan is some minor caps and an achieve.

never had an issue getting caps in new vegas, I generally use blackjack for caps, far less irritating and very quick.

Same, never would get used to or master caravan. I usually lose most caravan games.

Just started playing a few weeks ago, and Caravan kept me afloat in the early game. Now, later in the game, its easy to sell my victims' gear for neverending cash. But at the start, without companions and with only a varmint rifle and 9mm, always short on ammo, it wasnt too easy to plunder. So I learned to drain the NPCs with Caravan, first the bartendress and Ringo in Goodsprings, then the postmaster in Primm, and finally Nobark at Novac, making sure to raise the ante as high as i could afford. The AI is very bad at playing the game, and after learning to play I only lost a handful of hands. Without Caravan winnings to upgrade my gear and accumulate sufficient ammo, the early game would have been a more of a grind.

...and it really accentuated the Old West atmosphere of the game too

I never needed to play caravan at all. I now know where to get good weapons and get the best guns at low condition then repair them with weapon repair kits. Loved it that way.

That's the mark of a good RPG, many ways to get it done...

Yeah, and got to thank Obsidian for hiring the original developers of Fallout for that. Even making BOS to have low conditioned high end weapons.

Need to have level 14 for Jury Rigging perk. And unlimited access to weapons repair kits only after passing Dead Money.

Traders can make a maximum bet of half their cash. If you have learned to play the caravan, you buy everything you need for caps from the merchant and immediately beat them in the cards several times.

Yeah, that is true. And i know it is hard to get Jury Rigging perk right away. I just make weapon repair kits before jury rigging perk and in Old World Blues (they have much more scrap metal than the vanilla game ever has).

The one and only trick you need to remember is that don't bother to win the stack that your opponent is about to win.

You don't have to make every 3 stacks to be at 21 ~ 26, you just need only 2 of them to be in that between numbers. If your opponent is winning at the middle stack, you might as well putting your card on either left or right instead of going for the middle.

I don't want to brag about myself, but I hardly ever lose any caravan games, even if I just randomly swap my deck before the game starts.

But it is true that Johnson Nash has A LOT of sabotage cards(King and Jack). I'd say he's by far the hardest caravan opponent =.

They say because of this, Obsidian later patched their game so that all merchants who plays caravan with players would only plays 3 times. After third caravan was played, the players can no longer play more caravans with them, and possibly 'exploit' this method.

Yeah, most players are much better off of buying crappy top tier weapons and repair them then sell them.
