So I gave Boone the fat man
.....took me 4 instances of my limbs being crippled to finally realized that giving boone explosives is a mistake

I've learn two things from this:
> don't give boone explosives
> remember to check his inventory for the "all american" you have been wasting minutes looking for

Pretty sure giving any NPC a Fat Man is a bad idea. Sort of like giving NPCs a full auto weapon in Fallout 1.

Personally I only really found the Fat Man useful for fighting Death Claws. You pretty much always fight them outside, and often have enought time to setup your shot. There is no really loss if you can't loot the corpse that now rest on the moon. Death Claws are also nasty enough that I dislike fighting them even at high levels (try the hidden Death Claw area on the far side of the river if you want to face the greatest threat in NV). Finally the ammo cost a way too much for my tastes and I would prefer buying other stuff like tons of high grade ammo.

I just snipe them myself.

I setup traps or point blank throw fat mines at deathclaws.

Yeah there is more then one way to kill a Deathclaw, but there is really no other good use for the Fat Man.

I would be careful giving Boone any good weapon. He likes to drop them.

Actually, I gave him the fat man because it was taking up space in my inventory. I didn't notice that it was boone using the weapon until the 4th times he uses it and blows it up two feet away from me.

Also I found that the best way to fight death claws is to exploit it's faulty ai. Just find a large roCk or any large object and reach the top of it while making sure that you had to jump to reach it. A good way to check is if your companion has trouble following you, if done correctly, you are free to fire anything you have on the death claws and they wouldn't be able to touch you.
