Is this all there is?
I have been wandering around the wasteland and then I looked at the full map for the first time, is this all there is? It is so tiny? I went to New Vegas and walked through it in a couple of minutes, so small. I went into the former BoS bunker and found the path to a new area, I am glad I saved it before I went in, what a load of rubbish!! I have had FONV for quite some time, but always been in FO4. If thisw is all there is to FONV, its heading for a black hole.

It may seem small, but I found more interesting places in NV than either F3 or F4. It's about quality, not quantity. Well maybe not the best quality in terms of looks, but whatever. The map sizes between the games are actually quite the same though, just NV has a more narrow look while F4's eastern side is water.

"The gamebryo engine sucks, NV was rushed, the actual strip was suppose to be alot bigger, blah blah blah," it's all been said for the past 8 years. The point is once you get in the mindset that NV is a game where interactions with characters and roleplaying are more important than endless bad guy zones and empty exploration like F3 or F4, you will have a much better experience.

Also, mods help.

If you have all the DLCs, then you should try finding the three other worldspaces. Big Mountain, Zion and The Divide. All of the locations have their own quest so you can find them.

To be fare FO4 is newer had a much bigger budget and had total freedom of what to do, FNV was given a script and a set budget as obsidian where paid to make fnv and most likely wouldn't get more funding even if they requested it, FNV has better reviews more freedom and options better characters with histroy even linking them to dlc, where as FO4 this only happens if you hack picked a side you want to be with and the options are rahter poor, fallout in a sandbox enviorment is more fun for the player you can own the strip, work for it, be in the ncr, legion, have ncr and bos alliance and more where as FO4 well all ending lead to close to the same thing, what im getting at isgive FNV a try and just follow where you feel like you want to go, if you own the dlc there is one of them that is a little annoying on hardcore mode wont say what one, but if you happen to come across it enjoy (: ..... lol

Actually New Vegas is bigger than both Fallout 3 (4%) and Fallout 4 (20%)

And that's excluding the DLC maps which are quite big.

Also, as others have said, quality matters. Obsidian has a very, very different view on worldbuilding than Bethesda.

Bethesda builds theme parks / action games, whereas Obsidian makes RPG's and tries to make believable worlds.

Walk around in FO3/4 and ask yourself questions such as: "where do they get their food?", "how do the trade supply routes work?", "where do they get water?", "how has this settlement managed to survive and rebuild?", and so on. You will not be able to answer most of these questions.

In NV, on the other hand, it's very obvious, and becoming aware of this will make you appreciate the world (building) even more, if you're an Obsidian/CRPG fan that is.

Some people see NV's world as "boring", because yes, you do not run into a settlement built inside a ship or around a nuclear bomb at every corner, nor will you find a crashed 44-gunned frigate on top of an office building.

Instead, you will explore the NCR sharecropper farms, Goodsprings source, HELIOS one, and so on. Less "interesting" locations but certainly they make more sense and more thought was put into them.

The fundamental issue for many people with New Vegas is that they take it at face value as either Fallout 3 or 4 or any similar game has trained them to do. I was victim to the same mentality when I started NV. There's actually a deep RPG to this game if you would just give it a fair chance. The size of the map will become completely irrelevant once you get sucked in to the plot.

If you're looking just at the size of a map "square" then yes, NV map is bigger, but it should also be noted that NV map is plagued with invisible walls.

You can see that the playable size of NV is actually very small.

For OP, If you want additional content for exploring, I'd suggest AWOP mod.
look a little harder. that's all i can say.

Do you want quality or quantity? Either way, FNV wins.

FNV's base map size is larger, so even with inaccessible areas removed, FNV is bigger. Also, FO4's map is ~1/4 water, which is empty of content, so taking that into account and lining them up to scale you get:

Someone made another map which goes farther and removes the inaccessible locations such as FNV's mountains and FO3's DC ruins and did the math and FNV is still bigger than FO3, but FO4 now wins.

Fallout 3: 8.462 sq km
Fallout NV: 8.502 sq km
Fallout 4: 9.743 sq km

This map is including the large, useless water area in FO4 shown on the previous map because it's technically accessible. If you remove that area, FNV is bigger.

To me both FO3 and FNV "seem" smaller in scale than FO4 does. I think it has to do with ease of acess and height. In FO4 areas are easily more reachable to get too, devoid mostly of random invisible walls or even clunkier jump mechanics. Height as I mentioned can add loads of depth to exploration and making an area seem much bigger. Height also adds to the perception of space.

So while yes. FNV is bigger, perception and spacial planning can go a long, long way.

Is this it? Yup, and it's still more interesting than all of Fallout 4 (aka: Fallout - Trash Collector Edition).

Don't worry, F4 has plenty of settlements to save. Empty. Lonely settlements, that you have to build yourself with generic NPCs. fun fun. Don't forget to collect all of the desk fans and aluminum cans you can carry.

Thanks for the replies, I cant get into FONV at all, and keep going back to FO4. I think I'll bin FONV to the library.

the problem I had with Fallout 4 is it has no spirit. its just empty locations with one of 4 enemies all dropping generic loot that I procees into base components to make into useful settlement improvements to improve the rare my settlements produce glue.

You might want to try stardew valley if you like fallout 4. its a much better farming simulator.

I've put nearly 200 hours into New Vegas in a single playthrough, and although this includes the four DLC, I haven't even progressed past the point where you confront Benny in the main storyline. And I still have lots of locations (maybe 1/4 to 1/3 I'd say) on the main map left unexplored.

So, no matter the size of the main map, I'd say there's a fair share of good content and exploration to be had in the game.

Sure, one can walk through the city of New Vegas in a few minutes, but I've spent dozens of hours questing there already. Maybe give that a try, not just walking?
