What level do have to be at by the time you get to Novac?

I'm level 4 and I keep getting killed by the viper gangs and Golden Geckos outside of Novac. Am I just bad at the game or were other side quests I could have done to level up?

You can be any level you want to be at any point, but typically if you follow the main path you're usually level 7 by novac.

Did you do the Primm side quests? Good springs? NCR correctional facility? Mojave outpost? Nipton?

There's quite a bit of quest experience in novac (you shouldn't be passing through golden geckos to get to novac unless you went way out of the way).

I did the Sheriff mission in Primm, I didn't even know there were other missions in Goodsprings and the NCRCF. Where's the one in GoodSprings?

All of Goodsprings and Primm are made of basic side quests and NPCs you talk to for information and quests. Talk to people.

You should do the side quests on goodsprings and primm. But yeah, you had the the same case as me. I arrived at the helios one when I was level 7. Yeah, i only got 2 hours of gameplay. You can actually surviced those attacks by having good armor and weaponary. But it's ur choice, I arrived on Novac when I was level 9 because I'm levelling up first and ask boone as my partner, then take care of the ghouls and the nightkins in repconn facility. This is pretty cheesy and definitely an exploit and on PC you might as well just use the console, but yeah:
1. Get 25 barter or speech
2. Go into the saloon in goodsprings
3. Watch the scene with Cobb
4. Follow Cobb to the goodsprings outskirts and take his quest
5. Kill the guy you're told to kill
6. Go back to Cobb and take the next section of the quest
7. Shoot Cobb in the face
8. Repeatedly rob the general store by talking to the owner for infinite 9mm ammo, xp, and leather armor that can be sold for caps. Because Cobb is dead, the next section of the quest can't be started and the game lets you keep doing the same easy speech check.

Maybe it's because I invested a lot into Sneak earlier on but I had no problem with the Golden Geckos during the Ghoul mission. As far as the Vipers went, I just took an alternate route up on the mountain cliffs instead of the main road in order to avoid getting sniped by their Laser weapons. Wasn't that hard. OR you can take N473's option provided you haven't killed the Powder Gangers in Goodsprings yet. There are other Exp glitches you can try but they're not as efficient.

I think I've played this game too much because I know of all the Viper spawns on the way to Vegas so I'm always prepared to fight them, and fire off a few grenades to scatter them into the open.
