The Legion only embraced some of the ancient Roman culture, mostly it's knowledge about warfare tactics and way of life regarding that particular mentality (strength in numbers, honor etc).

Their society is more akin to the ancient Greeks (only men are citizens and slaves ownership is allowed - minus the homossexual relationships and culture - their culture is only about war) and Mongols (conquer everything under one banner).

Did the game ever explicitly say the Legion has a problem with homosexuality? I don't actually remember. Because considering how much time the men spend far away from home on lengthy campaigns in large camps lacking privacy, and how they are forced to marry women from other tribes, I could sort of buy that homosexuality is engaged in. Like they basically breed their assigned wives whenever they go home but then head right back out to war with all their bros.
