You obviously misunderstood. Lore-wise is regarding the story and its outcome, not any sort of gameplay advantage.
I believe Rex to be the best option lore wise because it seems like the most enjoyable memories the dog could have. Not that of the fiend mutt Violetta or the vicious Legion attack dog turned mother; Lupa. That and both Violetta and Lupa are female dogs, while Rey and Rex are male dogs. Weird for a dog to be conflicted on their sex.
The sex difference is just hormones and the Legion memories make for a better fit according to the endslide.
