Tips for a Wandering Master build?
I've just started a new game, and I've decided to mix it up a little. Instead of doing what I usually do, I've decided to base my current build on those old Hong Kong wuxia movies of the '60's and '70's. I know that I'll need high Str, Agil, and Personality, and my skills will be primarily focused on Unarmed, Melee, and Speech, but can anyone think of any other tips for this build?

Heaviest armor you can afford. If you limit yourself to melee/ unarmed then powe armor will be a god send.

Otherwise drugs. Lots of drugs. Doesn't fit the theme though imo.

Sneak and if hardcore survival are must have skills for you. Slayer, piercing strike, etc. Decent fists are relatively mid game but good melees like knock knock are easy to get.

I'm not planning on doing a hardcore run, as that's generally not the way I prefer to play the game.

I know I'm going to need perks that increase close-quarters survivability, though. I'm not yet high enough level to meet the pre-reqs, but they are definitely on my list. In terms of melee weapons, I'm leaning more towards swords and spears, as they best fit with the theme I want.
That retired ranger Andy in Novac teaches a fighting move if you do his side quest. I think there might be other moves you can learn too, but I'm not sure.

Yeah, I already know about that one, I've just never been in a situation where my build made it feasible. IIRC, Diane in Red Rock Canyon teaches you an unarmed move, too. It's definitely one of the Khans.

Vernonica, Andy, Diane, and the one from Dead Money

Light Armor actually isn't half bad, if you make sure you get the right perks. You move faster, crit more, and get crit less. If I was rolling a Kung Fu type character I'd avoid Heavy Armor because Power Armor just doesn't fit the build fantasy at all. Even Leather Armor may not, but at least it's closer than heavy duty metal armors.

In a melee/unarmed build hardcore isn't really limitating, the most annoying (yet neccesary to enjoy the game for me) limitation being ammunition weight.

Unfortunately there's no valid spear in game appart the Dead Money's cosmic knife spear (how hard is it for wastelander to craft a pointy stick? baffles me), and as for sword, GRA adds a (one-handed?) katana that should fit to the theme, the only other proper swords being Davison's one (in Repconn test site) and blade of the west in the Divide, both two-handed.

Actually more efficient most of the time regardless of the theme, as "shiny armor" (or whatever that perk's name is) is broken without mod, and the DT difference is not really significant and easily compensated by toughness.

Sneak holds no benefits behind 50 points, except for taking perks like "Ninja", wich might fit to the theme but is broken without mod : only multiplies critical chances by 1,15 instead of adding a flat 15%. Survival is more a flavour skill (especially since they gave tons of low-weight ultra-efficient military rations in LR, wich kinda broke the food mechanic)
I suggest u should get this mod

https://youtu.be/xRURbrH_OGQ this mod does a number of things here but the most importent thing is that it has both non letheal and letheal takedowns which u can get by a perk however executing them requires u to press l instead of e

What about the implants you can get at that clinic near the Gun Runner's base? Some of them might add to my DT, which I think would also fit in with the theme. After all, many of those movies have a character who takes a sword blow to the torso without even suffering a scratch.

I might go with the katana, but I also want to know what you think about the Shishkebab for this build.

You can get the Implant and also take Stonewall and Toughness perks... and I think there is another one that's good but I can't be arsed to look them all up right now. Check out the wiki for the game and check the perks lists.

I'd skip the Shishkebab but only because A - it takes extra perks to get the full use out of (there are one or two fire damage bonus perks) and B - it's a flaming stick attached to a backpack; not very Kung Fu-esque from an aesthetic point of view. Same with skipping some things like Rippers and Chainsaws. That aesthetic doesn't seem to be what you're going for here, and you made it sound like that matters more to you than min-maxing out a character.

You're right about that. Min-maxing is okay, but for the purposes of this build, it takes second banana to how well something fits with the theme. Leather armor will work relatively well for the purposes of this, as there are a few wuxia movies where the heroes are wearing armor, but I think I won't use a Shishkebab. So in light of that, I'll go with a katana as my weapon of choice; what are the weapon mods I'll need to get the most use out of that?

All of them, really.[fallout.wikia.com] You can put all of a weapon's mods on it, you don't have to pick and choose.

One last question. I'm trying to figure out a theme-aproppriate weapon to go with until I can actually get a katana, and so I was wondering if a pool stick would work. Does it make for a good weapon?
