Its main advantage is it has some of the lowest spread on an Automatic Weapon, compared to the LMG, 12.7 SMG, and Auto Rifle which have the highest.
It works well enough, but compares poorly against its proper competition. Truth be told I would favour a 9mm SMG over it let alone the other options.
The damage of a single shot is not the only important characteristic for an automatic weapon. This should be taken into account in battle with armored enemies, but not overestimate. The vast majority of opponents in the game are protected at the level of leather armor (<10 DT), not so many have a level of CA protection (~15 DT), a few with 20 DT or higher protection.
LMG damage is 21: in 9 out of 10 cases, at least 50% of the nominal DPS on standard ammo. I myself rarely used LMG, as well as 12.7mm SMG, preferred the riot shotgun for close combat. But in the hands of companions, especially Boone, this is a very powerful tool. They can use extremely cheap surplus rounds without a negative side effects in the form of rapid wear of the barrel. 12.7mm SMG base damage is 36 and one of the highest DPS in game, it is effective even against heavily armored opponents. 12.7mm ammunition is somewhat expensive and rare on sale (in large quantities sold at the NCR base at Vegas Airport and at the dam), but in the second half of the game this is no longer a problem.
I do not consider the spread a big problem for such type of weapon, it is not for sniping. The most likely distance from medium to short. I myself in the game from automatic weapons used the energy RCW laser most often. It, if desired, can be used for a long distance.
The SMG has a x2 Spread Multiplier. the SMMG has x0.9.
Meaning, the SMG struggles to hit anything outside of short range while the SMMG can hit Melee Enemies like Cazadores and Deathclaws well before they get within striking distance.
Combining that with the Significantly larger Ammo Capacity, the SMMG is a more versatile weapon overall.
