New vegas' equivalent of the lincoln repeater from fallout 3, Provide it with SWC ammunition from the handloader perk and it can carry you through an entire playthrough on its own, Its one weapon i bring into every dlc outside of dead money, And one of the only two i bring into honest hearts.

It has 108 crit damage which is just under the 110 of the antimateriel rifle and paciencia, 162 with the better criticals perk and unlike those two you have both proper hollow point ammo AND armor piercing ammo that doesn't reduce your overall damage since SWC rounds negate 6DT, It is a bit hard to obtain large amounts of its ammo if you don't know where to look, Purchase from bardon in hoover dam and the great khan armorer right outside red rock canyon, They sell several hundreds to several thousand rounds for every type of ammo.

I'd also buy from contreras in mccarran, He doesn't sell 45-70 gov't but he does stock around 1300-1500 .308 rounds which you can break down for their powder, Handloading 45-70 uses a lot and may be easier for you to get rifle powder that way than buying .50 ammo from the npcs mentioned before.

The gun itself also has amazing iron sights, Completely clear cut as opposed to the obstructive metal post with a hole that the regular brush gun has, It has an extremely high dps on its own which can be further improved with rushing water from the survival skill since only semiautomatic weapons are affected by the buff.
