How there is still packaged food...ANSWERED!
Ok so I have been thinking for a while on this. Alot of people complain that somehow food from 200 years ago is still good, and they have their reasons obviously. Now, I can't speak for F3 and F4, but I imagine how food stayed fresh after 2 centuries in NV is actually quite simple. It's not from 200 years ago.

Theory 1 - Ok, so for the most part, society gained a foothold in the western states by the time New Vegas happens, you have the NCR, which is basically another USA, and the Legion. So in that time some people got to together in old food factories and processing plants and just been loading up boxes and cans of fresh food. After all, there is vegetation and farming. So basically what I am getting at is that somwhere in the NCR there is a factory reusing old pre-war packaging to make new food. Dandy Boy Apples? Fresh apples are obviously growing somewhere. Salisbury Steak? Someone just uses Brahmin meat. Yum Yum Deviled Eggs? There is plenty of animals who lay eggs. So it's not 200 years old, just not the same food that was once in the boxes. Also, the towns in NV are pretty much connected by trade, new food is constantly coming in. Now of course I can't say its for everywhere, because there is plenty of locations that have been neglected for 2 centuries like vaults so the food there must be old, but i think it helps with the "lore" when talking about vendors selling boxed food.

Theory 2 - Fallout is a strange universe. there is gel that can make you live forever, vending machines that can create basically anything out of coins, hand held teleportation devices. It's wacky. We all know this. So what is there to say that maybe the packaging is made of some really futuristic material that keeps food lasting for centuries? May not seem probable, but honestly there is way wierder things in this series. After all, the apocalypse does not only take place in the future, but in a future where basically everything is based off of 50's technology and ideals. You think some mad scientist in 1950 was researching a way to keep food fresh for hundred years with threats of nuclear anniliation looming?

About theory 2, it doesn't really hold up.
Those vending machines in the Sierra Madre aren't readily accessable everywhere and big MT transponder thingy is something only the Courier gets after OWB.
They are highly experimental technologies.

What about FO3 and FO4?

As an American, I can attest that everything here is absolutely loaded with preservatives and the radiation is probably just keeping them stale but not rotten forever.
This is similar to why you find random ammunition in drawers. Unlike Australia (think: Mad Max), we openly brandish and stockpile guns and ammunition, so we don’t have to send feral kids out unto tanker hoods for a single shotgun shell.

Lol. Not to mention when you do finally get a shotgun shell it's a dud anyway. No wonder feral kids stuck to sharpened boomerangs

Preservatives. lots and lots and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ LOTS of preservatives. they used to dump LOADS of them into food, especially canned food, way back, before they were found to be unhealthy to eat. back during the red scare, people who had fallout bunkers would pack it full of canned goods to ride out the nuclear apocalypse. what i want to know is how do these people eat friggin "instamash" mashed potatoes and Blamco mac and cheese without water
