I am by the mainframe to fix the broken cable. I have already set the mirrors. I have the scrap metal but it says I need to be repair level 50, or whatever, to fix the cable. Does this mean I have to go out and multiply before I attain such a level?? THen come back again ...............

Yeap, you might need to gain some experience and invest in the repair skill. Quite useful actually, just like... any other skill.

no idea of levels because it have only just come back across from Fallout4. I had started FONV but left it a while back. The pitboy does not show levels, at least I think it does not.

Alternatively you could read a Fixing Things magazine, it temporarily boosts your repair skill by 10 points, 20 with comprehension.

Levels show in Pipboy. I think it's that left button, end left button again.

Robot did the job and I set mainframe to option 1. It svaed config, then I set 3. and alarm went off but nothing seemed to happen. So I went to the mirrors and clicked reset, that seems to work. But the switch on the tower wont do anything, seems it may only work 9-5 ;) Everythnig else seesm to be right.

The controls are different from FO4. You have to click the 'status' button then click on the additional tabs.

Inventory manipulation is different too. 'E' exits. There isn't a 'do you really want to take all' warning either.

You had completed everything if you set the power redistribution. The panel you can only access between 9 and 5 is just a test fire on Archimedes and kills off most of the ncr at Helios giving you infamy with them.

the archimedes 'fire' did nothing -s o obviously something was not set. I had the two towers set and did not wait around to work 9-5; I told it to give power to the two points mentioned by old big head, but saw no reaction. I'll head back one day and have another look.

Uh yeah, because it clearly says only works between 9 and 5 and you even mentioned that you didn't try between 9 and 5. Seems like an open and shut case to me

Also if you did what the followers guy suggested for power then talk to him again he will give you a science book I believe. If you did what fantastic asked then you get quest experience and ncr fame.
