how do you get your companion to equip clothing of your choseing

i really want cass to equip a speific clothing

They will equip whatever has the highest DT in their inventory, with the exception of Faction armor (ie. Boone won't wear Legion armor). If the clothes you give her have lower DT, then she won't equip them.

i said clothing, not armor.

The game treats both as the same thing.
If you want to have her wear, let's say, that dress from the women at the Ultra Luxe, then you're out of luck, because they have no DT, so Cass will never wear them.

Of course, you can always mod your game so you can dress your followers directly.

Put the apparel you want them to wear in their inventory, find the id on the wiki, open console, select Cass, enter in equipitem xxxxxx 1

does it have to be cass or can it be any character?

also agree with the other guy you need the clothing and weapons to have either more DT or damage than the default items they have.

It sucks tbh b/c you can't give them a surplus of say 9mm ammo and a 9mm sub machine gun to be useful instead of getting less mileage from selling them for caps.
