+rads=gives you rads
-rads (in the case of cave fungus and Rad-away).
most foods give you rads b/c lore wise, in fallout, people put a crap ton of rads into everything (foods, water, etc.). They just dumped it into the water sources too b/c Rad-Away was so common. Then the bombs dropped and stuff got either irridiated, water sources got contaminated, and foods remained the same.
As for your question OP, +rads gives you rads, -rads takes them away. Don't worry about them, rads from food build up incredibly slowly and can be purged with radaway.
Radioactive dust is not a seasoning that people added.
https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Radiation
Scroll down to the radiation in the fallout world.
To be fair though there was a very short and brief time when radiation WAS used irl. Most notably the atomic chemistry kit and as paint for the glowing numbers on watches (look up radium girls). Hell it was even used as a medicine (some tonic water containing a small dose of uranium and other compounds.
Just like like coke having cocaine and opium in drugs. Though this was waaayyyyy back like during/shortly after the industrial revolution. Probably where the whole rad theme for fallout came from since it was modeled after a 50's-60's theme with some early 1900's mixed in.
I mean we had middle ages plaggue doctors who prescribed lead and other now we they're dangerous items and metals. Also see mad hatter syndrome where they would go mad from using lead pin needles
It already had some rads even before it was sealed and packaged. Thats why food found in bunkers and vaults contains rads. See above post for more detailed explination.
In the Fallout series, when you see items that are +rads, then you are talking about foodstuffs contaminated with radioactive dust (i.e., as a consequence of a nuclear exposion).
Rice has a high arsenic content to it. Certain countries are extremely high, while others not so much. Arsenic is a natural element, so it is already in the things around us, including other foods besides rice. But it is high in rice, brown rice especially because how unrefined it is and clings to the extra fibers of the brown rice. In the USA, Texas and I forget the other states, they grow rice on what used to be cotton fields. The slaves would work the fields and to kill the cotton weevils to protect the crops the land owners would spray pesticides with arsenic in it. Well even decades later the arsenic is still in the soil. It may always be in the soil for all intensive purposes.
But instead of cotton, they now grow rice. So now the rice has really high concentration of arsenic on them. Simply washing the rice, which is suggested regardless to get some of the starch off and to ensure no dirt or pebbles are in it, will not wash all or maybe even any of the arsenic away. Neither does boiling it. So what happens is when you buy rice Made in the USA, you are potentially buying from Texas and any other state that has a high concentration of arsenic. The label, as far as I am aware of or I have never seen it at least, will NOT tell you where in the United States it was grown, only that is was grown in the USA.
So you have no idea if you are getting a safe batch or not. Just don't eat it Made in the USA if it is a rice product. And the FDA is not warning us, only about baby food with rice in it and only because others had to break the news to us. I eat tons of rice, mainly from places like Thailand which are safe, you can research all this on the wiki or look up on YouTube. China and Japan and many other Asian countries eat tons of rice every day and obviously they are doing well.
The Japanese are one of the highest living and healthiest people in the world. Although it should be noted after the Fukushima Disaster the government was thinking about putting the rice crops that grew near the damaged reactor onto the market again so they could readily get back on their feet. The kicker? They were not going to tell the public where the rice was coming from, only that it was Made in Japan. I do not know if that actually eventually happened or not, but obviously the people in Japan were upset. The difference between Japan and America is, is that they could still go to rice shops where they carry dozens of rices made in Japan and others and the sellers could tell you what province, at what time of year and probably the day the rice was picked. In America you don't have that sort of knowledge.
This has been long and I fear some of you trailed off a while ago, but one more word of advice about rice. Even if you buy from an authentic Asian store, read the label of where the rice was grown. Even if it has Asian lettering, even with Asian back ground and art and it screams Asian, read the label. 9 times out of 10 it will still be grown in the USA and they are marketing rice that is poisoning you and your family and most likely are charging an arm and a leg because they are trying to make it look like it is sushi rice from Japan, when in reality it is in the USA. Just be careful is all I am saying. Thank you.

Per the wiki on rice- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rice
{As arsenic is a natural element in soil, water, and air, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) monitors the levels of arsenic in foods, particularly in rice products used commonly for infant food.[20] While growing, rice plants tend to absorb arsenic more readily than other food crops, requiring expanded testing by the FDA for possible arsenic-related risks associated with rice consumption in the United States.[20] In April 2016, the FDA proposed a limit of 100 parts per billion (ppb) for inorganic arsenic in infant rice cereal and other foods to minimize exposure of infants to arsenic.[20] For water contamination by arsenic, the United States Environmental Protection Agency has set a lower standard of 10 ppb.[21]
Arsenic is a Group 1 carcinogen.[20][22] The amount of arsenic in rice varies widely with the greatest concentration in brown rice and rice grown on land formerly used to grow cotton, such as in Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, and Texas.[23] White rice grown in Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, and Texas, which account collectively for 76 percent of American-produced rice, had higher levels of arsenic than other regions of the world studied, possibly because of past use of arsenic-based pesticides to control cotton weevils.[24] Jasmine rice from Thailand and Basmati rice from Pakistan and India contain the least arsenic among rice varieties in one study.[25] China has set a limit of 150 ppb for arsenic in rice.[26] }
I wouldn't doubt that if they gave the power suits +rads / sec rad resistance and rad away would become as useful as stimpacks and foods.
I used to eat straight from the can... o_O
