If you just have to have the DPS, and don't care about anything else in the world, get it.
Ammo isn't *THAT* much of a concern. unless you aren't using vendors and workbenches. you can convert ammo from microfusion to ECP and then ECP to ECP optimized (for carry weight) or ECP Max charge for things with armor.
the comparable roll is the avenger minigun
http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/CZ57_Avenger
which has comparable everything. the difference is lasers get a flat bonus to chance to crit. (Which is significant with burst fire weapons.)
The avenger has a DPS of 390 regular ammo carries -10 DT and the AP ammo is -25DT which is harder to find. Without any perks
the Gatling laser DPS without any perks is 300 DPS and the Sprtel wood is 320 DPS.
But there are laser specific perks, such as laser commander, set lasers for fun which add 15% damage and a flat chance to crit. which amounts to basically 20% more damage
putting us around 441 DPS vs the 390 of the avenger mini gun. also ED-E after lonesome road produces ammo and weapon repair kits and not sure if it does the +5 beam damage for your beam or just his beam but if its your beam it would be amazing difference.
