What Fallout 4's story should have been.
I think many of us can agree that Fallout 4's story is quite bad and boring. The story is inconsistent, lore-breaking and poorly written. If you read Pete Hindes tweets about Fallout, he and the other writers don't care about the world of Fallout, they can't take it seriously and just want to have fun. To me, this is not a good attitude to have when creating a world. If J. R. R. Tolkien didn't care about making Middle-Earth consistent and realistic in the world it's set in, nobody would care about Lord of the Rings. That's why we see a kid in a fridge for 200 years without eating or drinking in 4, they don't care. I think this story would suit the Fallout universe better than 4's story.

After the events of New Vegas, the NCR are pushed out of the Mojave by the Courier (I'm going with Wild Cards) but plan to expand their society across all over America. 30 years after the events of New Vegas, the NCR make their way to the Commonwealth and there the eastern Brotherhood of Steel had already made base in Boston. This leads to a massive confrontation and to war. The NCR want to bring law, order and democracy back, just like the old world. They would see the BOS as an obstacle in their way to bring the America of old back because the eastern Brotherhood care more about protecting people instead of building a stable society. These two opposing ideologies would lead to war.

The player character, who's not a war veteran with a family and from the old world, is thrown into the conflict and has to solve it. But along the way, you discover a much bigger threat than the war between the NCR and BOS, the Institution and their large army of androids. Since the both sides are too preoccupied with each other, they don't see the true threat that threatens the Commonwealth or perhaps the world.

The Institution create the army of androids to control people, find lost technologies like the cloud in the Sierra Madre to have more control over everyone. They're big enough to challenge the NCR and the BOS combined.

Then the RPG elements play a role. You can side with the one of the factions and destroy the other two, convince the NCR and BOS the institution are the much bigger threat but it doesn't end the conflict between them, convince one or two of them to leave Boston, etc.

I would say in this story, the Minutemen don't exist since they too stupid to do anything, they deserve to die. The Railroad has to exist since they were already established in Fallout 3 because I care about consistency.

Overall, what do you think? If you didn't like it, what story would you come up with?

I suppose but I made this story more connected to New Vegas, so it would be related to that game rather than 4.

To be fair, he would have just been met with piss and venom for suggesting that there was anything wrong with 4, especially since his re-write includes plot elements from New Vegas.

I also got the concept for the plot from A Song of Ice and Fire, people fighting over something that is really pointless when there's a much better enemy looming.

The US is a huge country. If the NCR had reached the Commonwealth it would have to be set pretty far after NV.

I don't like the idea of reusing too many factions either. I'd much prefer if there were only 1 or 2 returning factions and then a load of new ones.

Honestly, the one single problem I have with Fallout 4 is that, after being separated from your son for so long, after going through cybernetically enhanced entities, radiation storms, and a trip down sad memory lane, you find this old guy who treats you more as a goon than a freaking father/mother and who also suffers of a cancer that SHOULD be cured with the Vault 81 cure, but as you pointed out, consistency clearly wasn't pursued.

Had Bethesda done a whole lot more when it came to the relationship between the character and Shawn, maybe adding a mission where you two play baseball or just TALK like fathers/mothers and sons should, I would have no problem. They just randomly turned a search for your son into a power struggle between different factions that didn't really make that interesting of a plot, so if they'd focused more on the familial aspect, I would have been content.

If the writing were better and still had the search for your son, perhaps it would have been interesting. It's just they didn't care to develop the characters for the player to care about.
Fallout fours factions were a joke.

MIT was supposed to tug at your heart strings because you kid (Who we didnt give a ♥♥♥♥ about anyways) is running it.
Railroad was just there. Seriously they had no character development and didnt add anything to the plot.
Brotherhood was there for nostalgia from fallout 3
and the minutemen were IMO the best of the bunch because you get that feeling of building it up.

The quests are also a joke

Go here. Do thing/kill thing. Loot. Repeat.

Nope, very boring typical blockbuster plot you got there with no depth or originality
NCR already fought BoS, Insitute doesn't care about anything but research
