The only one I ever bring along is ED-E because it's the only one that can be truely passive by setting him to melee only. It's got the built in workbench, and can be a good mule when looting a lot of stuff. I also like the little tune when you enter combat because it can work as an early warning for enemies you don't see coming.
Cass' perk is useless IMHO.
Pick wichever has the opposit gender to you, mate.
Boone isn't all that great either, it's hard to do his personal quest and because he's so reckless, he tends to attack any Legion member even when I don't intend to bring him to a Legion camp, thus netting me infamy and having assassins attack me when I have yet to get better armor and weapons. The only thing I really liked was his companion perk, that's it.
ED-E triumphs all, maybe a bit too much but still.
