Purified food & water source
Is it a "normal" playstyle to eat & drink irradiated food & water and when radiation cumulates then remove it with RadAway ?

Currently I try to avoid any irradiated food & water,
but it requires me to **fast travel** to distant locations or use whatever there's left in my inventory, which I prefer to avoid.
(Traveling increases the Starvation and Dehydration)

Most suggestions to food were:
* Hunt Brahmin/Geckos and eat their steak - But it is radiated..
* Collect purified food in refrigerators - probably the game doesn't include refrigerators whenever you need.. Sometimes you're in the middle of a big quest and you can't find purified food.

Suggestions to purified water were:
* There are many places with purified water - but it requires fast travel.
* Collect purified water - but I assume that I'll be in a quest where all the purified water will end.
* Collect irradiated water and craft purified water: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Mass_purified_water
Haven't tried it yet but I assume that it's not that easy to find a place to craft.

You can also pay a doctor to "cure" your radiation. I say go to the campfire and make steaks is the best bet.

Cave Fungus and Fiery Purgative also remove Rads....common in Honest Hearts DLC

its got what 2 rads? takes 200 rads before you notice it. just eat the damn steak.

dirty water is a bit messier but it still takes at least 20 waters before you get radiated.

taking rad-away works. taking fiery purgative works. OWB makes dirty water not irradiate you.

but if its less radioactive than nuka cola. just drink it.

....also you can drink water from .... like lakes and stuff which is usually not irradiated.

I understand from your answer that this playstyle is normal - eating irradiated food & water and then using a doctor/RadAway to cure the radiation.
Thx

But the Survival skill to craft a steak is 50..
See: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Bighorner_steak

I prefer to invest the skill in other important stuff:
1. Speech - Many encounters with speech check.
2. Lockpick - Many safes & doors to be picked, even at the beginning of the game.
3. Barter - In order to but stuff with low price and sell in increased price. There are even speech checks.
4. Repair - Often helps to complete quests better and required to repair items / crafting.
5. Science - To hack terminals and sometimes required in order to acheive a better result in a quest.
6. Medicine - Improves health and sometimes required in order to heal other people ("mini-side-quest")

so? you start the game you take skilled, you respec you take skilled again, you eat the skill book south of town in the trailer +23 survival.

Gecko steak is 25 survival to craft. You play how you want.

cactus fruit. prickly pear. eat that. Or other kinds of cactus fruit, banna yucca. stuffs everywhere.

I didn't understand the meaning of that sentence:
1. What is "skilled" ?
2. What is "respec" ?

There are places to craft all over the place, they're not hard to find at all. There is also another recipe you can use for Purified Water called Cactus Water. All you need is a Survival skill level of 30, an Empty Soda Bottle and two Prickly Pear Cactus, which can be found all over the place. You then brew it up using a Campfire, which is probably the most common crafting station. Also, Legion soldiers always have some when you kill them and loot their bodies. It's really not hard to keep yourself supplied with Purified Water in the game. I always end up with at least 100 bottles of the stuff in my fridge at the Lucky 38.

its a somewhat minor bug that commonly gets abused because it has no downsides.

what you do is take the trait 'skilled' at the start of the game, +5 to all skills for -5% to all exp gained. later, when you are on your way out of goodsprings, you respec your character when the game asks, even if you dont change anything. for whatever reason, rebuilding your character with skilled keeps the inital +5 points to all skills, removes the -5% xp, then reapplies the whole thing, resulting in a total +10 skill points with only the -5% xp gain.

as for the matter of the survival skill, it is a good skill to level in hardcore, as it also improves how much hunger or thirst food and drink items restore.

Seriously? Killing a Legion soldier is the most difficult thing =O

I understand that it is a trait which belongs to the Add-On Old World Blues:

I have only the vanilla game, without add-ons..

They won't be in time. They're certainly a lot easier than going up against a Deathclaw or a pack of Cazadores. Unless you side with the Legion, you're going to have to kill them eventually.

You really should think about getting the DLCs, they add a lot to the game.

Foof Items:
Pure, non-radiated food sources include Prickly Pears and Agave as well as Honey Mesquite and Banana Yucka - those sources are somewhat abundant; they all offer sustenance in addition to rehydration benefits and all faiirly lite weight so good stocking is possible without tremendous encumbrance.

Perks:
There are anti-radiation perks reducing effects when consuming food stuff and general exposure as well as buffs that may prove a benefit from DLC like Old World Blues primarily the artificial heart that has a blood filtration system also making your character immune to toxins/poisons.

Comments:
It is very possible to build a strong character with minimal forethought once a gamer becomes slightly familiar with what perks are available through normal leveling and obtainable through missions/quests and DLC. After a few playthroughs most, if not all, become so familiar with the leveling system and story based perks that you can almost visualize the branching and benefits of working out a build in your head on the spot --it will happen eventually.

As far as food and such, the concept is slightly daunting first run, but much of the same carries over from normal playthrough to Hard Core mode; HCM just makes the game a bit more interesting and offers a lite incline to challenge letting players jump in with less headache up front.

Take care.
