How do I put my weapon away?

Hold down the button used to draw it. (or press it again for 1 handed melee weapons). For 360 controller, it's x. You should be able to check the controls under options.

There's no spot for drawing/holstering your weapon in the controls

LOL - IKR --it does get frustrating at times. FONV has many "hidden" actions that actually make game play informative from the Pip-boy stats tracking to immersive gameplay actions like holstering weapons. Takes me back to FO2 in the NCR city (can't remember the name) where certain areas you had better holster your weapons or have the authorities come down on you with force.

Why would you? the wasteland is a dangerous place my friend and holstering your weapon is the last thing you would thing about.

I shot an NPC in the face by accident, because I didn't know how to holster my weapon

it means that misclick you didnt mean to do, didnt fire your gun, potentaly aggro an npc, waste a bullet, and give your position away.

you also run faster with your two handed weapon holstered, one handed weapons dont affect run speed unholstered. there is also somthing about the gun not blocking your sight, which can be a signifigant problem with things like missile launchers.

NPC companions can die if you shoot them after letting them go/disbanding allowing you to see their end-game death ending <.< moohahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. *cough, that hurt.
