Steam workshop subscriptions not working in game
I've subscribed to items to fix the ugliness that the previous developer unfortunately bestowed on dearly beloved AOE2 such as the farms and the cliffs, but none of these items are getting replaced in game. I also have subscribed to a music replacement, which restores the original AOE soundtrack (god knows why it's not included by default) while keeping the expansion tracks as well, and this also isn't being presented in the game for me.

Does anyone else have this issue, and does anyone know a way to force Steam to download the subscribed-to items?

Anybody else have an issue with AOE2 workshop items not downloading and appearing in-game?

I was having the same problem. I followed steam's procedure to re-install steam and it trashed AOE II HD, I can get the menu but play doesn't work. When I click on play it starts all the flash stuff in the centre of the menu. No response yet after requesting help.

Are you seeing the items downloading on your 'downloads' tab? On our livestream we did a few texture pack changes yesterday without issue for example.

gbouskill, have you gone between 2.3 and 2.5? Did you make a new profile in game? You may need to bring up the launcher and then delete the player profile in the game's folders (so the cloud doesn't overwrite the profiles).

I'm not sure where the downloads tab is, but under view-downloadable-content there's nothing. I've unsubscribed from all the items I was using, uninstalled the game, reinstalled, and resubscribed, but still nothing works in game, and nothing appears to download.

MS Ryz0n, wouldn't it make sense to restore the original farms and cliffs, then offer the newly made assets as a mod? The new stuff clashes horribly with the rest of the game and looks terrible: the original stuff are 3D models rendered to sprites, and the new are gaudy 2D art, which looks like it was drawn in MS paint. The cliffs lack the detail that makes them look like cliffs. The new fire looks ok, but the new water is very pixelated, and I'd personally prefer to use the original, if it was available.

Also, the HD release is missing the original soundtrack, featuring only the expansion soundtrack. The original one is better, and it would be ideal if the game featured both the original and the expansion soundtrack, rather than just the one.

Also, every time the game is alt+tabbed, the music resets to the beginning of the soundtrack.

I got to the downloads tab, unsubscribed to my items, quit steam, restarted steam, subscribed back to the items, it showed items downloading for AOE2 in the downloads sections and they complete. But when I play the game, none of the downloaded items are there. The 3 I just tested it with are:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=137627603
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=137062719 - the cliffs in that picture are zoomed in, so they look pixelated, but they aren't in the actual game.

But none of those items should require a mod to restore, as they're the original authentic AOE2 assets. The replacements of the art, and the omission of the original soundtrack are severely experience-killing. Amature 2D art does not meld with professional 3D art in a scene, it contrasts.

Open your AoEII HD folder, open the mods folder, and extract each of the packages manually to where the files should go based on the archive's folder structure. Basically you're downloading the archive by subbing to Steam workshop and manually extracting the files. Should work perfect. Not sure why you have to do this with this game

That worked as a workaround, thanks. Still, Steam support needs to be contacted to correct the failure of archives not self-extracting and installing.

MS Ryz0n, is this problem noted and being worked on?

Noticing it's not auto-extracting workshop mods at the moment for me (haven't had issues in previous builds). Will make a note of it. thanks.

Oh...derp. Quite simple here really. steam says "I see you already have the mod downloaded in your mod folder", so it's not re-downloading and extracting. So what you want to do - unsub to your mod, then go to the mods folder and remove the mod package from there, then resub and it should work properly.
Please note we cannot guarantee that a mod created in 2.3 will function 100% in 2.5, depends on what was changed in the mod. All the texture packs should be fine, but any of the unit balance changes might need to be re-made on the current version.

Wow this is an old discussion. It's still a problem though.
There are some that work and some that don't and this randomly changes. I'd say 3 times out of 10 you can get a random mod to work. I'm suggesting they do away with the stupid subscribe option and allow you to hit an "ADD TO GAME" button that notifies you when it's done downloading and successfully added. Maybe have each mod update automatically as newer versions come out.
Another problem I noticed is that even when I can find each mods original download link and manually install it, the game STILL doesn't take the mod. Trying texture mods here and I put the textures right in the directory to replace the old ones, with no luck.

There's a limit of 30 subscribed items at once - any additional subs will not download. See http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/discussions/-1/864979883911637197/?appid=221380 for some additional tips.

Some of these Workshop mods supposedly require that you let the intro movie play at least once (you can skip once it starts) to install them. You could try that. There was also another problem I was having with the Workshop once, and I think I had to verify the game cache to fix it.

I actually figured it out. Click on subscribe and usually it should stick a file in your Program Files/Steam/SteamApps/Common/"game"/MODS folder as a blank file. If you have a program like 7zip you can almost always open that blank file and extract it. Then find out where each file in that folder goes within your game's files. Each file should always be in their respectful folders. Make sure to back up the old files if you wish to save them, or you can do that thing with Steam that allows you to revert to the original game's files, and simply replace the old versions of each file. The mod system with Steam is very buggy so it's more effective to do it the way I just described.
