Goths aren't particularly powerful for a noob, but they're strong if you know their strategies. Thing is, they aren't that hard to learn. Look for booming tutorials (boom into imperial and, after researching Perfusion, make as many huskarls as possible or, if the enemy comes with cavalry, make halberdiers) or trush + man at arms tutorials (get agressive with towers and the cheapest men at arms as soon as you get to feudal). Aztecs are great but you'll have 0 cavalry, Malay require a bit of experience to fully use their age up bonus, and Vikings end up needing more archers than infantry (but they do have good infantry, berserks are excelent these days).

Japanese by far.

Japanese: Their infantry attacks fast and samurai are great against most melee unique units. They have the second best and the most mobile trebuchets to back them up as siege.

Malay: After researching forced levy, you only need lumberjacks and farmers to spam as much infantry as you want, and karambits are literal zerglings to overrun any enemy. If you come from a low-skill clicking-heavy RTS like StarCraft, they are the best to get into AoE2 infantry usage.

Malians: They are an all-around civ, but their infantry has a very good pierce armour stat. They also have strong cavalry and decent-ish archers and siege to act as backup.

Slavs: They have a nice farm bonus to make production easier, and thanks to druzhina, their infantry can kill entire armies in second. Their infantry is in close competition with the Japanese for being the best infantry in the game, and the larger the battles, the more Slavs start to get the advantage. They also have great siege against the pesky ranged units.

Aztecs: If you know how to handle the Meso-civ economy, then fully upgraded eagle warriors can raid and destroy most any economies. Their unique unit is also one of the most effective infantry-killers in the game.

Honourable mention - Vikings: Since the expansions, they actually can do more than spam arbalests infinitely. Berserkers are especially useful now.

Honourable mention 2 - Italians: Before the latest patch, spamming condottiero was more or less your "I win now" button. They are still strong as hell, and can potentially out-spam and out-kill a good Goth spam, but they are more of a possibility now and not their core tactic.

You would think it is easy but not mention - Goths: Playing Goths well is a lot more difficult than you would think. Since they can only start their spam in late castle and lack almost all defensive capabilities, shutting down a Goth in feudal is not that difficult. Also, many players rely solely on champs and huskarls but forget to add hand cannons against he anti-infantry units.

I'd say Aztects, Goths or Japanese.

Celts are an all around good civ for beginners
Lord Puddington Apr 10, 2018 @ 4:48am
Celts aren't bad, but they shine even more when you know how to perform a drush. It is believed knight rush and feudal rushes are the most effective strategies for newbs, a successful drush requires some micro, and Celts are particularly good here because of faster militia. Also, when you have their excelent siege going, make sure those payloads don't hit friendly units. Top eco bonus, though.

Goth 30% cheaper inf

Teutons extremely cheap farms, have access to broad variety of units and buildings.

Have 1 of the best UU vs melee units The TK aka Teuton Knight, 10 base armor as elite, can withstand lots of beating!

Teuton knight is also slower than almost every other unit in the game (if its not the slowest). This means unless your enemy is an idiot (or an AI), you never get them into combat. The only real way to use them is like a siege unit (they are damn good at taking out buildings) or a guard.

Oh, they fixed the Slav farming bonus?
talgaby Apr 11, 2018 @ 11:02pm
Yes, in the latest patch.
Well, technically, they fixed it 3-4 times already, but this time it actually works.
