Another thing that makes Gbeto is really good is their supports.
Throwing axeman needs a pretty expensive supports(Paladins,Champions, and Halberdier*)
while Gbeto has a unique, and cheaper supports (Light Cavalry[14 Attacks turns them into a Mini Knight],and Pikeman[with 7 Pierce armor, any arrows is just meh)
It also helps that they are attached to probably my favourite well-balanced post-Conquerors civs.
Because Gbeto is faster & have more range + attack. In the HD version, the devs are trying everything possible to boost Axeman (adding their HP, giving Squires, etc). But as long as Axeman only possess mediocre attack damage & movement speed, they won't be as useful as Gbeto or Mameluke. Other than for killing Halbs, Axeman usage if quite limited for me.
