How to best use the Elite Huskarl (DM)? Counters and strengths.
So, I know that the Elite Huskarl is great because
(1) it is OP vs archers
(2) it can be created SUPER fast, allowing for spam.

My questions are:
(1) When should I use champion instead
(2) What units counter it well,
(3) What units do you all combo the EHusk with?

I already have my thoughts on all of these matters, but I'd like to see what the community thinks!

If it's a random game vs other civs, use it early in the game quickly to raid villagers and depending on opponent switch to other infantry. If it's a mirror game, then i would use them a lot in combination with champions and scorpions.

They are great to raid with as well due to high pierce armor.

1. Create champions if the opponent is massing trash (besides the skirmisher) or their own champions.

2: Any cavalry unit decimates them, especially the Cataphract. Most infantry will destroy them as well especially the Jaguar warrior, Teutonic knight and Samurai.

3: I just combine them with halberds most of the time.

Oh and hand cannons can kill them if microed well.

Even simple champions are great against huskarls since they do not have that much health and their melee armour is pretty weak. Essentially, anything melee-focused can crush them.
A good combo is either with halberdiers if the opponent is countering with cavalry or just champions if they go for infantry. Unless they are spamming jaguar warriors or samurai, then you are in some trouble and need some archers or cavalry of your own. Or just hope your barracks can out-spam their castles. Sometimes even high-level DM players just play for that.

Jaguars are Samurai are easily countered by hand cannons which the goths get.

^^^ That's what I always think whenever people say to counter them with Samurai/Jaguars/Tutons
What makes goths special is they have an imperial tech that lets them train huscarls from the barracks. Out producing them is very difficult.

So I would just say lots of farms and light cavalry (hussars even better). You should avoiding spending gold on units when you don't have to.

As for sieging a town with huscarls defending... magonels and petards, with elite skirmishers to distract castles and towers (they have lots of pierce armor).

Save your trebs for when you need them.

And handcanneers are easily countered by Onagers which every civ except the Turks and Huns get.

Just because a counter exist doesn't mean the unit becomes useless in its use or isn't a valid choice in this situation otherwise every unit is useless except maybe the Cataphract but as far i know i don't see mono-Cataphract armies constantly running around destroying everything.

Otherwise i will debunk your handcannoneer counter with my wonder which the handcannoneer can't destroy in time therefore handcannoneer isn't a valid counter to the wonder-supported jaguar warrior/teutonic knight/samurai.

And onagers are countered by bombard cannons which the goths get. :steammocking:

And Bombards are countered by scout cav which even the Teutons get.

However, a good thing to note is that while other unique units are countered pretty easily (archer units with skirms, mounted ones with pikes), the huskarl is countered with either unique units, or other units that the goths player easily counters with just a few other units.

I think that probably the best way to counter the huskarls (and therefore the goths) does not lie in a single unit, but in a good infastructure (Koreans late game deathball, for example) and rading goth eco (pretty much your only choice as britons)
