New player, what map do you recommend i play?
So i bought the game yestarday after watching smoke play for the past several days.

I was warned not to play on the official servers so i went on community servers.

I try to stick to low population servers for now until i get the hang of this game and what buttons to push.
So far ive played a bit on a community server running vanilla map. Idk what its called but i walked a lot and only saw forests. Very few pois

I also tried a low population server on a map called Esseker. Good looking map, i think its on the smaller side? I kept running into people way too ofter for a low population server

So far, its been grim. 98% of the people i run into kill me on sight, most of them even say they are friendly only to shoot me in the face.
Met couple of dudes who were really friendly and helped me out for a bit.

Anyway, what map do you suggest to a newer player?

I would definitely suggest Chernarus as your first map just because people are easier to avoid and it has enough fruit trees so it will be easier to survive. You can check out the online map of Chernarus and that should give you an idea where everything is located https://dayz.ginfo.gg/

Stay away from most of the military loot places if you wish to avoid encounters. Note also that the middle of the map so Novy Sobor and Stary are also hotspots for travelling players and campers!

And also note that the coastal areas have worse loot than the inland locations. Also the woods also have food in the form of mushrooms (all are currently edible) and also there is wild game.

KoS will almost always happen unless you are dealing with a fresh spawn that has no gun!
It is grim to begin with. Most interactions will end in death. Don't worry about losing loot and starting again. It happens to everyone. Nothing you have or get will ever be safe. Nothing. Either enjoy the interactions or avoid them, but....

Trust no one. It always works best if you see them first and catch them off guard. With a gun in your hand.

Which map is a preference only you can decide. Learn to survive and any map can be good.
Don't use external tools or maps, navigate by in game map/compass landmarks you will find DayZ more challenging and rewarding. Official servers are not that bad, especially after new incoming update, less hackers. And don't trust anyone!

years and years ago, I was browsing the forums looking for people to play with. Found a guy and we met up in game. It was a terrifying experience to say the least. We both spent the first few hours worried the other was planning on killing us.

That said, we became actual friends, even outside of this game. That was...5 or 6 years ago. We've lost touch since. But he taught me that not everyone on the internet is an a-hole.

99% of your encounters, regardless of official or unofficial servers will be a KoS engagement. Every now and again though, you will find that 1% that makes it all worth it.
I only have about 600 hrs. in game and I started out on PVE community servers so I can learn and not have to watch my back. PVE servers tend to help you more, just ask questions in chat. They tend to be low pop and I rarely see anyone, but know they are there if I need them. A good one to start on is DayZColony. It is Deer Isle which is a small map. Check the official launcher, Servers, Community, and find one you like, download the mods and join. You can then go to ones that have tougher zombies, wolves, bears etc. Join servers with PVE and PVP when you feel ready. See you on the road Survivor.

I actually just switched to a PVE server on the Esseker map (which has a billion mods, didnt know it had that many when i clicked join) and so far its been great.

Met few people there, said hi, that was mostly it with interactions but ive been having fun just learning the map and game, shooting up zombies and dieying to the op AI npcs who are patroling the military bases and airfields :)

Esseker is great, looks awesome, very well made map but its just too small for me, especially on pvp servers. Ill probably just avoid it for now when it comes to pvp. I will give Chernarus another go tho

bought this but only started playing properly. So far got KoS everytime but game is super rewarding once you learn how to navigate around and survive.
Hoping to get some good challenging play and perhaps a friendly face once in a while.
Livonia and Isle deer (or deer island or deer isle!!)
Try KingEzra's Domain. Server is set to Deerisle and there is only four of us currently playing on it.
