It might be easier than those guides really its not any where near as complex as it first seems. I'd recommend downloading a bunch and just reading them as well though, if you copy one, edit it and run it you can see what happens as a result.

You can open any RMS you download with Notepad
If I could suggest one thing: maybe try increasing the terrain cost of the connections going through forest, because at the moment you have completely straight paths of shallows cutting though forest (unless that's what you are going for). I just think it would look more real if the connections weren't straight, but that's just my opinion.
