i've always been a little bit intrigued by the half-life franchise. i used to wonder "what made the original half-life such a revolutionary thing in the 90's that it singlehandedly catapulted valve into international fame, and is still talked about today?"
i'd played the other notable classic valve titles, TF2, portal, and portal 2, but i'd never gotten my hands on half-life.
until 2 days ago.
i picked up half-life and the orange box for 4 dollars in total, from a sale.
today, i started up half-life for the first time ever, almost completely blind except for like... the g-man.
i can definitely see what made it so popular back in the day. dynamic combat, 3D environments, and great storytelling? this must've been amazing for kids back in the 90's.
but god, i've never seen a game age so poorly. all i see today is a generic, low-poly fps that doesn't feel like it was playtested or balanced at all.
gordon feels clunky yet floaty at the same time. the weapons are empty and unsatisfying to use. enemies will always have 100% accuracy, with the sole exception of headcrabs.
if this came out today, i guarantee you it'd have majority negative ratings. the story is still good, it's a valve title so... obviously. but this felt awful to play the whole way through and i didn't even finish it. i kept telling myself "oh, it's from 1998, it'll get better" and it never did. i reached my breaking point midgame in "on a rail" where you have to go through that wretched, infernal section where you're stuck on the rising cart and you're fired at by 3 soldiers with nowhere to run or take cover.
i ended up just watching a playthrough instead and i wish i hadn't bought the game to begin with.
it loses all its atmosphere once the military comes in and starts just being annoying. and then it gets worse. and worse. and doesn't stop being worse. and then gets left on a cliffhanger.
don't play it. it might have been revolutionary for it's time but it's not worth your money. go buy the portal games instead.

Yeah, yeah, i'd say so. Definitely could be better but you don't lose anything by giving it a shot.

Ways i'd improve this game? Consistent content updates. More units, more quests, more gamemodes. Add more ways to get the ingame currencies (munitions, gold, keys) and honestly, this game could be a real hit.
