I've been playing AoE2 since I have memory and I have always played campaigns and sometimes bot matches. Never touched the multiplayer or ranked since that's not what I like from AoE. Played the original campaigns so much I can recite the intros and outros by memory both in English and Spanish. To put things into perspective, I even find Tariq's campaign enjoyable.

But this is the worst DLC in AoE2:DE by far. Missions are annoying, long, tedious and the biggest sin of all is that they don't feel like you are playing AoE.

Get ready for enemies that spawn units infinite without having vills or an economy. Get ready to be 2 hours into a mission only for it to spawn 100 Imperial Age enemies that just so happen to counter everything you can make, instantly defeating you since you didn't play like the map creator wanted. Get ready to be ALWAYS on a timer of some kind, so if you like playing slow then f*ck you, better learn to play SP content like you were Hera in a tournament. Get ready to restart a mission 50 times because there was no way you could know stuff in advance unless you read guides. Get ready to have 3 or 4 unfair/annoying mechanics put against you that only detract from the experience instead of making it more challenging, and go against the core design of the game. And if you wanted to play any of the civs that got a scenario then don't bother either, since they are all gutted for them.

The flaws and annoyances get really obvious when you play them after finishing an actual campaign or mission, be it from the original AoK/Conq or newer. They are half as fun while being twice as annoying and seem to make mistakes that not even the original devs did.
Sadly some very important events like Nobunaga's rise to power, the creation of the Seljuk Turks and the Vandal migration/kingdom formation have already been used in this DLC so I don't believe we'll see campaigns about them even thought they would have been better that way.

TL;DR: Worst DLC in the game, scenarios feel like they're from a different game, unfun and hard for the sake of being hard instead of challenging.

Don't buy it if you like the classic style of campaigns and even if you like this type of scenario, just go download it for free.
Hopefully the lesson they take from this is not "SP content is not what people want" but instead "players don't like this kind of SP content". You want to make DLC without introducing new civs? Sure, but make campaigns for the civs that don't have them. REAL CAMPAIGNS, with 5 to 6 missions and a good story to tell. Japanese lack a campaign and you could make 3 or 4. Same with Chinese. Turks and Mayans also lack a campaign of their own. The Aztecs had a campaign about them fighting Cortés, why not make one about the Incas and Francisco Pizarro?

Honestly one of the greatest games of this year, arguably one of the best RPG experiences you can have in videogame form. The amount of choice in the story and the way you build your character is impressive and gives you hundreds of hours of entertainment.

Bonus points for being a complete game released at a fair price without 10 different season pass or pre order versions

It`s what we all love about Age Of Empires 2 but enhanced. The units look a lot better and the soundtrack has been remade in an awesome fashion.
If you like AoE it's a must buy.
