PROS:
  • lovely character design
  • quaint art style/aesthetic
  • outstanding soundtrack
  • charming settings to explore, interesting world-building
  • preachy yet important? morals (the very real circumstance occurring today--coal-mining and farming towns vaporizing at a rapid pace due to consolidation, green energy, youth moving to more populated suburbs and cities, etc., as well as the typical teenage existentialism)

CONS:
  • the main character is almost insufferable at times. the epitome of spoiled, immature, and reckless. she's mentally 12. i related to bea and angus, not so much to gregg, and i ended up actively disliking mae. this was probably on purpose, i realize, but is still grating
  • yes, i know, a whole motif in this game is "is choice but an illusion??" but honestly i felt it was genuinely lacking a bit in the freedom/choice-making department. i can accept that the dialogue choices being redundant was on purpose, but that doesn't make me think it was a fun or good thing to do
  • some of the plot ideas felt very loosely-strung together or thrown in at the last minute. very little explanation for things except "mae is just very mentally ill"
  • the band you're in feels kind of pointless. what are they practicing for?
  • the dream sequences were slow and eye-glazingly dull. as noted earlier, though, the orchestral arrangements were top-notch
  • a good lot of the dialogue was unrealistic (20-year-olds saying "effing" and "yuppers"?) and at times just fluffy, blabbering filler that i found myself skipping past. no i didnt skip past all of the dialogue, but how many times are gregg and mae going to go "crimes?" "crimes." to each other? as a result, the characters felt a bit flat to me
  • MANY loose ends that are not tied up at the conclusion of the game (maybe easy tie-ups for a sequel? still kind of irritating)
  • very short amount of playtime for twenty dollars, honestly. it took me under 7 hours to beat the entire game, and i explored minor character branches like germ, lori, and selmers in addition to the main friend group activities. for twenty dollars that isn't a very good playtime:cost ratio. that's my biggest sin with this game, in all honestly. for five, or even ten dollars, i'd recommend it. i cannot, in good faith, recommend paying full price for it.

tl;dr i did like the game in the sense that i liked the world and the characters in it, but the actual driving of the plot and the dialogue fell short in a lot of areas in which i wanted it to really shine. i guess that's why i wrote this review. this game could've been so much more. buy it at a discount.
