owned the original from all the way back in 2014
loved it tons, even more than RoR2
saw RoRR get teased on twitter, was there for its release, thought to myself,
"i don't need this, i can just play the ror from 2013, i don't know how to feel about this new one, is it really just the same game again?"

and then i saw someone grab an item i've never seen before, while playing as a character i've never seen before, on a map layout i've never seen before, using alternate abilities to what was baseline for that character to fight an enemy i've never seen before, and then activate a shrine of the mountain from ror2, and then while doing the teleporter fight they activated a bunch of new machines that turned drones into items and activated a specific equipment for a fee... and then i saw that you can just opt out of whatever you don't like about any of that, at any time!

what's not to love about that??

I took a stroll through Minetown after surviving the Gnomes and their tunnels...

I dodged a million boulders in the swamp, stealing from a castle and raiding a temple of its loot...

I killed the minotaur in his maze, stole his precious orb, and then relaxed with a nice game of Sokoban...

And then, I got thumped, by Thumpus the Troll.

Don't get me wrong: my positive review does not mean that Ubisoft isn't both extremely incompetent and perfectly willingly to forego any and all balance updates or quality of life changes that could stop For Honor from dying in the future in favor of games like Siege.

But, that doesn't mean it isn't still fun as hell if you can get into it, and while that can be a tough challenge, seeing how the learning curve is best described by the community as a straight line that becomes a 90 degree angle cliff... if you can make it past that barrier it can be worth your while, despite some relative jankiness and a disheartening amount of balance incompetence.

tl;dr Fun game, Ubi doesn't know what they're doing half the time (although they're definitely getting better), but we all make do with what we have... even when what we have requires getting past a seemingly insurmountable hurdle to enjoy it.

I'm gonna have to be brutally honest, here, and that honesty means changing my review from Positive to Negative.

I love this game. I hold many of the moments from the original very close to my heart, and so many great memories from it. I enjoyed my first playthrough, despite the flaws, and got 100% for the hell of it. But, I don't think even the rosiest of rose tinted nostalgia goggles could hide the parts of this remake that just feel so... so rushed, and unfinished, like there was so much more to be done.

I really want to keep my review positive, to say that the flaws and the bugs don't detract from the fun... but they really do. And while I can easily care less about the nostalgia, I can't easily care less about a game feeling like it got *worse* with the remake.

Yeah, there's small issues like some of the cutscenes using the original's audio and, thus, not really working with the new animations, but that's easy to ignore. Then, when there's finally something that doesn't seem quite right, it sticks out like a sore thumb and can't easily be overlooked.

I'll be real, THQ Nordic is hitting it outta the park since their return, but... this one needed a bit more work behind the scenes before it got shipped. I can only hope now that the other SB game they're working on doesn't fall through, and we can see what they can do without needing to meet the expectations of a remaster.

Do you like Monopoly?
Do you like losing friends over a game of Monopoly?
Would you rather be completely anonymous as you screw people over in a game of Monopoly?

Well, my good steam review scroller, I am happy to say that you clicked one the right steam game today.
