Take a watered-down version of Amnesia TDD, stir in 10 years of graphical improvements and storytelling experience, sprinkle on equal parts The Matrix and A Quiet Place, and you get this game. Very highly recommended, Frictional is as sharp as ever.

Hi [Friend_Name_Here], you have to check out this game, it's the most innovative shooter I've played in years.

It's very difficult to articulate my experience in SOMA. As a horror game, it has scares and creepy moments aplenty, but it won't scratch that hardcore survival-horror itch you might be feeling. As a commentary on human consciousness and existence, it excels... provided you are willing to invest and immerse yourself. This what I bought the game for, and it delivered in spades. I won't pretend that I'll be walking away from this game with my eyes opened with new knowledge about the human condition, but I *will* be pondering the choices and themes SOMA has presented for a very long time, especially the ending.

Perhaps SOMA's greatest attribute is how it makes you think. Curiosity will fuel you through this game, wanting to know what happened and what happens next. The notes and audio logs contain a rich narrative that takes some effort to piece together, but is entirely worth it in the end.

Another strong point for SOMA is the environment it lays out for you. Frictional have really honed their craft in this area, able to tell stories entirely from visual cues and details. One area in particular comes to mind, an Escher-esque tower that is home to one of the most memorable sequences in the game. Diagrams and documents prior to this area explain exactly why there are toilets on the walls and ladders descending horizontally, but I will leave that a secret for now.

The long and short of it is, if you want a good story, great environments, and a thought-provoking commentary about human life, this game is for you. If you want a survival-horror scarefest, you will leave SOMA with much less than everyone else.

A fun little Roguelite FPS that's easy to pick up every so often. It holds a particular charm for me, as I've got a soft spot in my heart for games that take a "Ratchet and Clank" approach to weapon upgrading, i.e. gaining XP fills a meter, which when full, promotes your weapon to the next level and gives it slightly better properties (increased firerate, more damage, etc.) The aesthetic design is akin to Psychonauts in some ways, very wonky and unusual for an FPS, but enjoyable. There's also a loose "story" element for each playthrough in the form of little dialogue boxes that pop up every now and again, giving a different background to your character each time you play. So far, I've won twice, once as a semi-drunk college kid, and another as a secret-agent matador facing off against his arch-rival. I'd definitely recommend buying this one, if you haven't already gotten it from the recent Humble Indie Bundle.

Early Access Review
(This game is currently having a free weekend, I highly suggest you take advantage of it.)
Nosgoth at a glance can seem unbalanced and unfair. You will likely lose your first several matches, but if you stick around long enough to deeply understand how to play a certain class, you'll find how balanced the game actually is. I highly suggest you stick to playing as the Hunter for Human rounds, and the Reaver for Vampire rounds (though the Tyrant can be easy to learn.) Sticking to these classes will ensure that you are both able to contribute to the battle with decent damage and powers, while also not getting in the way with a possible lack of understanding of certain class mechanics (looking at you, Sentinel-noobs and Prophet-users. >.>)
One other thing to note: while the devs are very committed to updating and improving the game, it still suffers from many issues associated with being in closed-beta. The matchmaking and party systems can be unreliable, and if you're unlucky the game may just not work at all for you, either because of login bugs or some other issue. Regardless, if you don't have these issues and stick around the game long enough to reach Rank 10, you'll definitely enjoy your time in Nosgoth. :P

I'll admit, I had never played a Tomb Raider title up until buying this game, so I didn't go into it with the same sense of nostalgia that others did. I feel I didn't need to; the game stands on its own as a fantastic experience with great mechanics and progression, and it is an all-around enjoyable experience. I highly suggest you buy it at its current sale price, no need to go for the Survivor Edition as it mostly adds multiplayer weaponry.

So FTL: Advanced Edition came out recently, and I feel it's worth revisiting, just to reiterate how much I recommend this game. This new version almost doubles the content that was present in the initial version, including both meaningful additions in the form of new weapons, systems, and augmentations, as well as improvements on the annoyances and imperfections of the original. A big example of this is the option to send out a distress signal and wait one turn if you run out of fuel, as opposed to the instant game-over that was triggered in the original. There's a lot of depth added too, not just new junk to hold your interest for a while. Some of the new systems they've introduced, if bought, will replace stock systems that your ship starts with, like the Cloning Bay which replaces the Medical Bay, giving you the ability to regenerate dead crewmen unlimited times, but losing the ability to heal them except over time, and at the cost of lowered aquired skills per death. There are plenty more examples of this added depth, but I won't spoil them for you. For now, I once again whole-heartedly recommend this game, and suggest that those who already own it give it another go.
