Soooo... a game that never left beta, and will remaind forever, as a pre-release game.
Gaslamp studios is no more. So what you have right now is a full price, unfinished, kinda buggy hot mess.

But HEY, at least the community is working to fix it...

Unless the price drops off a cliff (sub 10 bucks) dont bother.

Soooo... once I got it running (which was a bit of a chore, it dosnt like Win 10 much) its fun. I has made some great improvments from Just Cause 2. And if you can get it on sale with the DLC, you will get a great return per hour on your money.

Its not utterly fantastic, but its good. I have done about 20 hours less then my time played shows (apparently left it running over night a few times) and I like it. Its nice to drop into for a few hours, blow up some stuff, and then go off and play other things.

So Im going to try and write a little bit for each Episode.

First, thanks to the free Chapter 1 (and a skin from Payday 2)...I bought all of it. And the sequal. Guilt and cash free. The irony of using the sale of a Gun Hat from a AA game to pay for a fairly Indy title is not lost on me.

So yeah. Its good. One sitting good. 3am came around and I had work in 4 hours good. And you can tell that its going to break your damned heart. And I can not wait.
Im being honest this play thru (IE not all decisions are going to be the 'best', just the ones I feel are right), and am debating if I can stand doing a paralel one that I make better choices on before advancing to Ch2.

Buy it. Now.

So Im playing during the free weekend. Im glad, because by and large, Im not having fun. A pair of CTDs, several network hicups (which because of stupid as ass 'always connected' gameplay for the free time, means that it just shuts down), a PATCH (which Ubi decided to do in the middle of the weekend, kicking everyone off for almost an hour). So lots of lost progress.

Single player, so far, is boring, and not fun. I suspect Im behind the learning curve, but it seems like it escalates out of control in a matter of moments, with endless reinforments.
And typical multiplayer, its a total crapshoot. First group was fantastic, everyone had mics, and at least one of the guys was a vetern player, and it was FUN...untill a random CTD, and the servers not saving my previous partners info to reconnect. Next 3 groups? Lets just say I had someone tell me to go do things incorrect for my anatomy. Because he couldent be bothered to turn his mic onto P2T mode.

All this combined with the wildly expensive DLC package...

I have been writing reviews of the Saints Row franchise since 2011. Its always been the weird, crazy, less sucessful cousin of GTA. Its been fun. I put a lot of faith in FUN for games.
2 was fun inspite of it being a craptastic port.
3 was utterly fantastic, and I dont think it missed a single step along the way, even with the studio closing its doors.
4 lost the magic, and I really think it was because it tried too hard. I laughed loud enough to annoy my dog more then once, but between those carefully crafted magical moments, it was kinda...only okay.

Now this. So, take away the REALLY repetive game play that was basicly a copy-paste from SR4, and your left with...well not much. Its got some good lines in it, and yes, its got a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ MUSICAL number, but its just not...much. I didnt rush thru anything, and I was done with this game at something like 75% in 8 hours. I spent longer enjoying NPC banter (which was really good...) then I think I did kicking devils in the crotch. I feel like the superpowers that you first got in SR4 got amped up even more, and that just spoiled the fun. It lost that "Zombie hookers with chainsaws" feeling that made its predicesors so good.

Buy it on sale. And kill Dex. For reals.

Its fun. By and large I like the characters, its got a good sense of humor, and the graphics look really good with the addational texture package. Buy it on sale, and its a good game. Its a bit intense on your hardware, so dont expect to run it at maxed out settings unless you have a brand new system, and it WILL test the cooling power on your CPU.

The DLC thing is bad. Like embarrisingly bad. Like my spelling bad. Ubi should be ASHAMED to have that much $7 DLC for something even 'I' could create in an afternoon. Oooo...hats and paint skins... but $250 bucks of DLC? Twenty One skin packages?

11/24/17 update: So many patches. SO MUCH IMPROVMENT! Now with workshop content? Take my money...

9/7/17 update: Dear god, do the devs sleep? This is getting a patch nearly ever day. And its already a lot better. That work is getting done. I look forward to more, but its defintly a better time.

So, I want to like this more then I do. Its not a bad game (see yes recommendation), but its still got some work needed. One of the things that CMS 15 had right was its zen. It was just a low impact game that you could play and relax.

Its got promise. And it will get there, but its not quite there yet.
