Early Access Review
The playtest demo is so good, for a hot minute I thought it was the full game, and forgot I didn't buy it yet. I was a little stumped when I couldn't find multiplayer games, and was worried it was a dead game.

Then I actually bought the game. It's a damn fun game. It's like War Thunder realistic mode, with a lil bit of Heliborne, and Project Wingman tossed in for some flavor.

Then there's those moments when someone decides to drop the sun(s), and you're staring out the side of your visor like this[i.redd.it]

Beautiful set pieces, some new mechanics, and unfortunately short. Really good mod, would highly recommend.

Hello? Gaijin? Yeah sorry we did it again.

No... No, the community manager fell out a window. No, the community is pissed. I don't know why, maybe it has something to do with another publisher thing...

Oh wait, this isn't war thunder. ♥♥♥♥ I thought I was on the phone with Gaijin.

First and Foremost
I love this game, it's very fun, and although grindy, it's fun. But I have to give it a negative review for one reason.

It crashes non-stop, and Gaijin just refuses to help with Linux crash issues. It only works on proton 7, some of the time. This has been well documented all the way back to 2018, and maybe even prior to that. But, I get dropped mid match, because the game just does not want to run, and you have to launch it in proton experimental, for it to crash, and then relaunch into proton 7 to get it to play.

Now more about the game
That out of the way, it's very fun. If you've ever played Robocraft, it's like that. It's got goofy voice acting that's just fun to dunk on. The gameplay is light hearted, and even when you have a bad match, it's not really that bad. I mean, sure there are matches that are a straight up curb stomp, but hey that's the way things go. Sometimes, you're the one doing the curb stomping, and it feels a bit cathartic.

Building, and creating is fun as heck, and you can get super goofy with it, or you can express a whole bunch of creativity, and the game certainly has some meta to it, but it's not absolutely busted, and there's plenty of ways to be dynamic in a match. The game has a lot of options for what weapons you can run with, what ways you can play it, and with the recent addition of helicopters, it's genuinely very fun.

I've been playing it on and off for a few years, and it's just one of those games I can come back to, and do a little bit of relearning of how things work, and start having fun, and getting creative with post apocalyptic jank machines.

If you do want to get into the game, I actually strongly recommend looking into buying some of the packs, since the grind to get basic parts is pretty brutal, and the packs offer you enough to get started, and actually have fun. Don't get me wrong, the grind has a purpose, and with the leveling, you will unlock a lot of really good stuff, but starting off with good parts, and not getting stomped is kind of a requirement, and if that requirement is $20-$30, then well yeah I say go for it. I'd also like to add, I've bought like two of the vehicle packs, and two or three of the season passes, honestly with some of the stuff you get in the packs, and passes, they're pretty worth it. The passes are also pretty easy to grind, they're not as brutal as the base game grind. But I'm a bit bias I guess, my friends have had almost no trouble leveling up their factions.

But like I said, I'd like to enjoy it more, and not have to do janky as hell workarounds to enjoy the game.

It's like a first person papers please, and is genuinely really fun. I absolutely enjoyed the story, and can see myself getting the itch to do endless mode when it comes out.

I would like to see more varied content when it comes to stuff that can come through the border though, not just contraband. Just weird funny things to change it up a little.

I'll be honest, it's not a terrible game. But ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ does it start to drag.

The bossfights honest to god aren't even fun. After a point it just becomes boss, boss, walk around, boss, boss, boss. They're not even interesting either, just repetitive button mashing, and stunlocking. Also, if you've got a boss that just stunlocks a player, I instantly hate it and just stop playing.

The super guy at the end, in the dome? Yeah ♥♥♥♥ him, I don't do stunlocks. He just blocks every melee hit, and closes into melee range instantly so you can't used ranged weapons on him. You just end up in a stunlock match where you're beaten until you bleed out all your health. I don't play games that do that ♥♥♥♥. It's the cheapest thing you could possibly design into a boss fight, and I refuse to play it.

Otherwise, the game up to this point was alright. Not $60 alright. Maybe $30 alright. But it really is a cheap clone of Dead Space 2, and it doesn't even really take the best elements of DS2. The horror elements aren't exactly there. You can see they try, with the whole human isolation part, where you're only human connection is with people over comms, but even then it's not really that scary.

The environments aren't exactly believable, because the way the prison is setup the place looks like it was a burning heap of garbage before the place was overrun by contagion. Everything falling apart before the show even begins isn't exactly believable. But suspension of disbelief.

The later stages of the game are a bit more interesting, but everything starts to blend together, and get very samey.

The story itself isn't bad, again I'm drawing DS2 vibes from it. But DS2 wasn't the best in the series. DS1 was. What made DS1 so great was because you were going in to a horror game, thinking you're gonna face all kinds of monsters. But it was never the monsters being the scariest part. It was the dark, claustrophobic hallways that opened up to huge abyssal expanses, and the psychological terror of absolute abyssal unknown. This game is just like, nah the monsters are what's real scary. Sure they try to make the atmosphere spooky, and it's pretty decent. But it's not like the source material.

There are also zero puzzles in the game, which is what I loved from all good horror games. Things that keep your brain from locking up, but also put an edge onto reality, where you have to sit there for a moment, and think about what you're doing, not knowing what's around you. DS1, and the older Resident Evil series got puzzles perfectly.

Lastly, I gotta go back to psychological horror aspects. This game has those freak episodes where Jacob, is pulling an Issac, and sees things that aren't there. But they're so few and far between. I'd love to see more psychological aspects to the game. I gotta draw to Dead Space 3 for a moment, because in it's coop, there were certain areas of the game where one player would see things that the other doesn't. As in, the environment is completely different for the two players. This was extremely innovative, and would be nice to see in here. Coop or not, and have it be a random thing between play-throughs. Where sometimes X area opens up that normally isn't open, or the arrangement of this area is very unfitting, is my character losing their mind?

I wish the team their best, I hope that this game was a rewarding experience for them, but I really hope they can learn from what made Dead Space, and other horror games so great. Good psychological horror/thriller features, solid puzzle design, that uses all the features afforded to the player (Like the gravity glove thing you get in game, could be used for so much, like how it's used in DS2). But a lot of gameplay features are just limited to combat scenarios.

I dunno, this game is a bit disappointing to me, but the stunlocking ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is what broke it for me. Like I said, dumb cheap fights like that are what get me to quit a game for good. I do hope the development team keeps trying, and refines what they have, because it has a lot of potential, but it seems like this game is misguided. They have talent, but just aren't using it correctly. I would absolutely love to see them do better, and explore the world they've created. But they really need to look into their gameplay loops a little better, and maybe go a little bit less conventional, as again, horror games don't generally fit into conventional gameplay loops.

This game is super fun, the devs care about it, and it's playerbase, and is super easy to pick up, and enjoy. It's more fun with friends, but pub is also decent! Sometimes you can get into unlimited player lobbies, like mine! Then you can really see some chaos!

Seeing as it's on sale both on Steam, and Humble Bundle, you're really losing out if you don't pick this game up.

Have you ever wanted to play Project Zomboid, but in an interwar (WWI - WWII) setting? Ya know, where you gather materials, build stuff, make things, and then go fight people with guns? (Ya know, minus the zombies) Even better have you wanted to do that in an MMO? Well, here ya go! The game is freaking great, the community is pretty dang solid, a lot of people wanna help new players learn, some are a bit spicy, but it's fun to dunk on them and make them mad. The game is full of awesome moments, and honestly feels like a more classic game, ya know no micro transaction ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, no xp grid ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. If you wanna unlock something, well you gotta do some RTS style research, and resource management to get it. Which also means a huge investment into teamwork is required (This is hampered a bit by large clans locking down lots of resources, and they can hamper gameplay, but it's not crippling, and I hope it doesn't become crippling, But I could see a path where something like that can happen).

All in all, it's a great game, the faults are very minor, and I would absolutely recommend the game, and would highly recommend watching some videos on how to learn the gameplay mechanics, since there's a lot off them.

I love this game,

But ♥♥♥♥ me it's not multiplayer, and I think with every update we drift further and further apart from multiplayer.
