Better than Diablo 4 and a fraction of the cost.

Dunno why I'm writing a review for HL on Steam now seeing as I've owned a physical copy since Black Friday 1998, but all these years later it's still my favorite FPS of all time and the game that defined my younger days. So many memories of staying up late on school nights playing HLDM and eventually the Counter-Strike beta (and later the first official release) and TFC - all on a 56k dialup modem.

Quite simply one of the greatest games I've ever had the pleasure of playing in my 30+ years of gaming.

Destruction Derby reborn.

Aside from having some of the most annoying/obnoxious characters in a game since Claptrap in Borderlands and the occasional FPS dips/stutters, the game is phenomenal even if you're not that big of a Harry Potter fan. The combat is fun and engaging, there's tons to do and explore, the graphics are stunning, and the amount of detail in everything is incredible.

EDIT: Changing my review to not recommended until they fix the stuttering/fps drops that have worsened since today's patch making the game virtually unplayable for myself and many others.

I'm really torn on this one. On the surface, I'd recommend it for fans of Dark Souls for obvious reasons as it's as much a DS clone as they come. The combat is pretty basic, feels very similar to the pacing of DS 1 and 2. Nothing wrong with that as those 2 are the better Souls games IMO. There's some cool weapons, abilities and ideas here.

Dig a little deeper however and this becomes a contender for "We have Dark Souls at home." Bugs and glitches abound that at this point and this long after the games release, I doubt they'll ever be fixed.
-Character randomly freezing up mid-combat leaving you to die a helpless death.
-Random glitches where your character, the enemies, and the world around you becoming completely invisible forcing you to quit out of the game and reload (which also will either let you continue where you were or...sometimes port you back to the last visited Breach, I guess? It's always a surpise.)
-Laughable enemy AI
-Downright confusing map layout in some areas of the game. (no fixing this one sadly though without a complete rebuild)
-Certain aspects seem there to simply make the game more difficult for the sake of being difficult, and this is completely contrary to the spirit of Dark Souls. This is mostly noticeable in the difficulty spikes between an areas mobs and that same areas boss.

Overall it's not a bad game. It has/had potential to be one of the better Souls clones. It's just more frustrating than it is fun at times, and due to that it's hard to recommend. I would say if anything it's at least worth getting on sale. Hopefully the developers learn from their mistakes with this one and improve upon the foundation they laid out for a sequel if they ever make one.

Why does there have to be a mobile version of this too? This game is going to get me fired!
