Very enjoyable Portal-like puzzle game (without the portals). Many of the puzzles are refreshingly challenging.

The story and world seem like some sort of brutal dark fever dream, and the multiplayer "messages" left everywhere are just weird. It's a bizarrely both depressingly lonely and cluttered with the leavings of players telling the same dumb jokes over and over.

Given all that, you'd think that I would dislike the game, but I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit, though I'll probably need to take breaks from the game so that it doesn't get too depressing. The art design and scale are breathtaking, and the combat is rich and challenging enough to make me constantly try to get better.

Decent story, especially if you are invested in the original FF7 or FF7 Remake. Combat is smooth and somewhat enjoyable, but not nearly as deep as FFY Remake's. Graphics are decent for a remaster, though you can tell that it's not nearly as polished as FF7 Remake. Some of the animations are a bit clunky, and the prerendered scenes are all blurry. I've seen other reviews criticizing the voice acting, and I honestly don't have a problem with it, though I never heard the original.

If you never played the original on PSP and want to enjoy the story, it's probably worth it to get on sale and scratch that FF7 itch until FF7 Rebirth releases next year.

Only buy if you enjoy working in thankless, dour clerical jobs and living in constant fear of failure. For me, it was tedious after 10 minutes, stressful after 30, and painful after an hour.

Is it creative? Yes. Is it fun? Not really.

I'm glad the game exists, for artistic reasons. However, I don't really want to spend time playing it, and I can't really recommend it to a general audience.

Early Access Review
My story is pretty typical. Built a nice house by the sea. Sailed around and got killed by a troll. Got my gear back and avenged myself on the troll.

Got killed by some skeletons. Got killed again by some skeletons. Finally killed the skeletons. Got scared and went back to my house.

Found another troll. Tried to hide from it in a stone tower, but it wouldn't leave. Finally had to battle it, and surprisingly won.

Now I wander around in the skins of two trolls carry the bones of the dead as my shield.

14 hours in and barely scratched the surface. A+

If you liked the original, you'll absolutely love the remake.

The Good:
- Amazing graphics
- Top-notch soundtrack
- Great story, even better than the original
- Fluid combat

The Bad:
- Overly-sexualized female characters that spend all their out-of-combat time posing and throwing themselves at Cloud. It's sad, because they've had some good backstory added and seem like genuinely interesting characters, but then they start sticking out their chests and acting like bimbos. It's jarring and unrealistic.
- Cloud's dialog. No, I don't want to spend 30 seconds watching him make weird noises and avoid eye contact.
- Barrett's dialog. It's like they took every stereotype of an aggressive black male thug and rolled them into one bizarre package. I didn't think they could make him any less believable than the original game (he was almost literally Mr. T with a gun for an arm), but they managed it somehow.

I like it much better playing in 2021 than when I first played in 2008. I'm still not a huge fan of dark environments and jump scares, but as a first-person action RPG, I'm enjoying it. I know it preceded Bethesda's Prey by a decade, but the systems feel very similar to me, and I enjoyed that game too.

Setting up a private server is a pain, and the game doesn't really teach you much about how to play, but it's such an enjoyable experience to get lost in once you get into it.

I'm enjoying it quite a bit. It's a bit of Half Life, a bit of Bioshock, a bit of Fallout, and Bethesda's signature great storytelling. The combat is fun and responsive, the sound design is great and the environments are beautifully rendered.
