This game is 60% action, 20% horror and 20% confusion and immersion in a story, that goes beyond what I initially expected. I came for the gun fights and spectacle and stayed for the story, the challenge and the overall gameplay.
While I first was annoyed by the missing ADS (which can be added as a unlockable cheat later down the line), it was never necessary and unlockable scopes and upgrades helped out a lot.

This is NOT FEAR, despite it looking like it. It is faster, more action packed and in many ways also scarier than FEAR ever was, depending on the levels. Also, it is bone hard, on hard... and there is 3 higher difficulties over hard...

Enjoy!

This is just a bunch of way too infuriating puzzles and puzzles. No story and no real reason to push through unless you actually like being angry.

I have been let down by so many Need for Speed (and other arcade racer) games and then comes around this little gem of a game, that brings me back to Need for Speed Underground 2, Most Wanted and Carbon. Not in the sense, that the games are all that similar, when compared directly, but it got things I have not seen in a while.

This game got me sweating to earn enough money to upgrade my car, tune it and then win the race. Once I barely got on second place, I got to evade the cops without trashing my car, slipping into my garage only seconds before one of those damn helicopters is catching me, saving my money that I earned that night. Then the grind begins again and another day of races, drift and takedown events start again.

It's not like no game has done this before, but the balance was just perfect for me. Just a tiny sprinkle of story, filled with a lot of partially cringey, yet still heartful dialogue and a fully voiced protagonist and motion capatured cutscenes (only a few). All that with some quite interesting stylistic choices, that may split the audience and supporters and haters.

So why does it remind me of those old Need for Speed games? Winning races feels tense, close, sweaty and every driver is sort of aggressive, races feel fast, the difference between a perfect corner drift and sliding into traffic, killing everything good about that race is just a tiny slip away. And that brings me back to Most Wanted and Carbon. The police chases are less well balanced. It is harder to escape, but it is barely impossible to be caught by them, so you stay in a limbo of barely not escaping, but never in a real threat, unless you wreck your car entirely. But in the end, it was still really entertaining.

I really recommend this game, despite all the downsides many other reviewers have voiced here. I had a ton of fun.

While this game is hard to run and still has some issues to be ironed out, I found the world, the humor and the gameplay highly entertaining. I can really recommend the game, if you have the hardware to run it.

It sort of reminds me of a singleplayer, more light hearted Destiny game. It takes a bit of time to get into the game, but when it gets going, it does not let you go. Do not take this as a the "magic call of duty" as many called it. The enemies, the leveling and the story are all so different, that the comparision does not stick.

I have seen a lot of negative reviews around this game, but the trailer and the gameplay convinced me otherwise. I went ahead an bought the game on a decent, but not crazy discount and went ahead playing it with keyboard and mouse for the most part - I tried the controller but it just did not fit for me personally, even though you can feel this is a controller game.

Anyway, the only thing I can say is, that you should expect an absolutely linear game, that only lets you explore minuscule side paths to collect gold or perks. The other thing is, that there is no RPG in these, even though I just talked about perks - and there is upgrades for gold as well - this is because the upgrades are fairly linear and there are no real choices. This game very much is a fighting game, mixing close combat punches, revolver spamming, rifle shots (the main thing you want a mouse for) and other gadgets together for a mix of boss fights and normal arena battles. There is some minor puzzles in it, but they are extremely easy, apart from one specific puzzle. The combat felt hard - on hard - so I had to move down to normal for most of the game, but since you can get back into the game with new game plus, this ain't an issue. The combat is fun and challenging and does not get old during the full game.

The story is nothing fancy, but the atmosphere and fantasy behind it is actually really cool. It does not outstay its welcome and keeps moving you through a lot of different environments. Nothing to complain about here. The graphics feel and look a bit odd in the beginning, but once you are used to them, they look neat. Performance could be better, but I can't complain in a singleplayer game, especially since there were no lags or hitches, no crashes either.

Given the caveats, I would recommend this game if nothing said here isn't a blocker or turn of for you.

I have been jumping from old school shooter to old school shooter, forgetting what the genre even means and eventually landed on this gem.

If you like it over the top, then you are going to love this one. It basically tells an absolutely bonkers story about an AI fusing with a street cleaner and only you can save the world. You have chainsaw legs and later even arms and it goes from there. Expect face paced combat, expect a lot of gore and gibs and expect to slide around a lot, high speed. Very enjoyable. The story is voiced and even funny at times. I would say, that the game tends to be on the easier side, so maybe choose a higher difficulty than Regular Joe. Sadly, changing the difficulty after the fact is not possible at all and you need to create a new save game, losing all collectibles and augments that way.

Go get this game! :)

This is probably one of the most fun and new experiences I have made in the last 10 years. After playing the first game in the series, I was intrigued how the second one would improve the formula.

I was not ready for a game that one-upped the previous one in every single category.

Granted, it is probably a bit hard to get into the game at first, especially due to its design, characters and things that just feel off, but once you are in the world, it all makes sense somehow. You care for the people, you want to help them and you want to know their history.
The different levels and abilities all work together really nicely and promote exploration. Whatever mind you explore, it will be different than the one before and every one will feel unique and cool.

I am not sure, whether there is anything I could complain about in this game apart from me wanting more of this, but that's a compliment, I guess!

Play it.

Wanted to play the singleplayer... was enjoying myself and then this happened: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDu43e0QMRk
They never bother to fix anything, so it stays a broken mess. But the games keep getting bought anyway, because the next one will be better, even if it is not.

I thoroughly enjoyed Chernobylite for its gameplay, atmosphere and the story. Sneaking around the Stalker-like areas, not knowing what you may find and experience, while sneaking, extremely underpowered, trying to catch the next soldier unaware is really fun. The dynamic starts shifting at some point and the areas become like your back-pocket, you know it in and out, though the enemies change, the environment gets more hostile the longer you play, It is a really interesting gameplay loop. The story feels a bit off at time and especially towards the end, it feels like it goes off the rails, but I did not mind that.

What I really disliked about the game were two things: Jumpscares, one of which I can still feel in my bones and nervous system. The other one is crashes, which mainly happened in "VR Games", which seems to be a later addition to the game. The bugs I encountered were: Getting stuck in the environment, which was fixed by reloading, and one certain mission reappearing every time I died (I found a thread about in steam, but the developers never fixed it, sadly).

But none of the downsides hindered my enjoyment of the game. Disable Raytracing (bad performance even on a RTX 4080), increase the difficulty of the enemies to hard and enjoy the ride in this game. Take your time, make mistakes and have fun! :)
