You can write a really good character this way and you basically need to be around 29-31 years old when Fallout New Vegas start. You did after all spend the first 19 years of your life in a vault and then 9 years on something + how many years it took to do whatever you did in fallout 3.
But both games can get quite good with a couple of mods. Still my own personnal pick is New Vegas for the superior writing.
Keep in mind that both games represent areas that are about 200x200 kilometers. Both have empty spaces in the forms of farmland and desert.
Both games feature cities and with Vegas it should be obvious because of the title.
New Vegas if you like your long quests with multiple solutions
To me its very diffirent. If it feels the same to you then alright too. But to me both games are very different when it comes to the environment.
