A new JSRS?
Hello dear community,

I know it has been rather quiet around this mod for a while now and I know that I constantly get requests to update or "fix" the mod.

For a long time, I’ve debated whether to make my current, private version of the sound mod public. Over the years, I’ve played it extensively, made countless changes, reworked it entirely, and eventually, in 2023, I decided to delete everything and start fresh. Despite this, I always had the thought in the back of my mind that, while it was my personal mod, it might one day be ready for a public release.

With that in mind, I rebuilt everything from the ground up, focusing on functionality while ensuring that the base game’s data remained intact. However, I’ve always been uncertain whether this mod still meets the expectations of today’s player base or if it’s ultimately just a subjective project without broader appeal.

Today, after spending two hours playing some random battles, I put together a short video. There’s nothing scripted here—it’s just a collection of moments I captured during gameplay. I’ve recorded similar clips countless times over the years, only to think, “No, it’s not good enough!” and scrapped them.

I’m not sure if that’s still the case, but today, for the first time, I felt certain that I need public feedback to determine whether further development and a potential release make sense.

One thing I should mention is that I likely wouldn’t be able to keep up with ongoing maintenance for a mod. That’s also the main reason JSRS is no longer being actively developed in the Steam Workshop.

So, please take a moment to watch the video and share your impressions. Let me know what you like, what you don’t like, and whether showcasing more of this project would be worthwhile. Your input would mean a lot!

Wow, I think it’s fantastic, both your new showcases and that you wanna come back!

I’d like to hear everything - to me, music, sounds and sfx is the most important element and your mod is an absolute elementary staple.

It even transformed how I react to incoming fire and how seriously I take the danger from that. Immersion & gameplay-behaviour improving mod.

More please <3

Holy, that's 2025-level sound design in a game from 2013. I really hope you keep developing it further!

Dear @LordJarhead, first of all thank you for JSRS in general. For years it was the "go-to" sound mod and for a good reason. It had its issues but most of them were fixed and things went pretty good.

These days, there are other sound mods around which are pretty good to and for me it really comes down to personal preference on which one every player/mission maker prefers!

I would love to see a JSRS2 with more optimized code and the same level of detail (and why not even better).

For your showcase videos, I do like some of the sounds that there are in there but (at least for me) some of them were pretty "isolated" from the whole environment. Gunshots and explosions for example sounded pretty "not loud enough" and I believe some reverberation would give a bit of a better "aesthetic" to the sounds and would help them blend in with the environment a bit more.

I would prefer louder sounds that pretty much create a tense atmosphere and a "small chaos" on the battlefield.

I do like what I heard and that's why I took the time to write on this post!

I would love to give more feedback if I can although I have to mention here that my military services, interaction with weapons and real life battlefield experience are pretty limited. And my playstyle is more of immersion but casual attitude so, please keep these details in mind when you assess my suggestions and weight my opinion!

Hello @LordJarhead, Your mod is always perfect it brings everything a game like Arma needs, which would be an option if it wasn't

equipment sounds when running etc but in an optional folder as maybe not everyone likes that

Will This Mod Include the Sounds from the Arma 3 CDLC:Expeditionary Forces?

@LordJarhead This is by far one of the best sound mods I've heard within ArmA. The quality alone is better than any sound mod I've used up to this point. Knowing the work you did on SOG I can say that this would definitely help improve the experience and is worth your time and effort.

I really do hope you end up finishing this or at least uploading a version of this onto the workshop at some point since I truly believe that 70% of what makes arma great is the sounds and what you show off currently is miles above anything I've used on the workshop for years.

Here is another example of my current build. I actually managed to cover the entire CUP asset list, but I'll show more details later.

Thank you all for the great feedback and support. 🙂

What do you think about long-term compatibility in regards to Reforger and Arma 4?

DUDE! This sounds amazing! I really hope you eventually release this, it sounds so crisp and refreshing. Not over-the-top or too subtitle, just perfect!

Hello, I think the sound of the now JSRS guns is too monotonous and weak, if you need to update or make a new mod, especially on top of the sound of the weapon needs to be more impactful, but at the same time not too harsh. I especially liked the previous JSRS in comparison, because back then the guns didn't feel like they were like jelly bean launchers now:rengesuprise:

Indeed, I've been working on the reverbs and tails a lot. The open fields, like very big open areas need some more work but I'm on it. Also the gear/Movement sounds are changed, same as the ambient sounds. These are even defined by the time of year. So in winter it sounds more chill and empty, while in the summer days there is more wildlife going on. I'll present that in a more detailed video sometime soon. Thank you for your feedback.

Thank you for your feedback. I do agree that this very early version shown above was a little lacking in audio volume and aggression. I did work a lot on the reverbs, especially in urban environments. I want to go loud and harsh, but also need to consider that players might have to listen to these sounds for multiple hours, so there is a certain balance required. But I keep that in mind :)
