Insanity
How does it work? my colonists go through various stages every now and then, but there seems to be no rhyme or reason. I thought it was just a random extra fluff thing as I never had anyone go about anxious, but then I started buying/ training animals and they all went insane then died/ berserked.

I assume that my doctors must have been treating the insanity of my colonists but I've never seen it happen, nor do I have the option to do so for my poor insane grizzly bear...

This also of course might be by design since a lovable grizzly bear buddy for each colonist isnt exactly in keeping with the Cthullu mythos, sooooo... yeah. Otherwise love the mod, havent met Shoggoths yet, looking forward to it.

Your animals are eating strange meat from the cosmic horrors. You have to be careful to keep them away from the strange meat.

The insanity goes away with time. I should change the description to be more obvious.

Ahhh, okay that makes a bit more sense, thanks!

I should be clear about the insanity system at the moment. Here are the mechanics in-case you might want to make changes or suggestions.

Insanity has five stages.
-----------------------------------
1. Initial (Tension)
Pain Boosted 130%
Consciousness +5%
Hearing +5%
Moving +5%
Manipulation +5%
-5% Mood (Tense)

2. Minor (Anxiety)
Pain boosted 150%
Consciousness +10%
Hearing +10%
Moving +10%
Manipulation +10%
-5% Mood (Anxious)

3.Major (Paranoia)
Talking -15%
Hearing +15%
Moving +15%
Manipulation +15%
Psychotic wandering will happen within a 9 day cycle
-10% Mood (Paranoid)

4. Severe (Madness)
Consciousness Max 80%
Talking Max 30%
Hearing -40%
Moving +25%
Manipulation +25%
Psychotic wandering will happen within a 5 day cycle
-0% Mood (Gone Mad)

5. Extreme (Insanity)
Consciousness Max 50%
Talking Max 0%
Hearing -40%
Moving +30%
Manipulation +30%
Berserk will happen within 12 hours
Life threatening.
Will die within 10 day period.
-0% Mood (Gone Insane)

Insanity clears up over time. Around 10% per day. I will be adding journals in the Industrial pack. If your character writes a journal or diary entry, they will double that percentage of lowering their insanity. I'm also considering strait jackets to hold people who are insane in safety until the insanity passes.

Personally I like the whole mechanic, the only issue is that there really is no benefit to allowing your colonists to eat strange meals. I was making them to sell, but with the fact that my colonists seem to fiend for them when available its probably a hell of alot simpler to just avoid them entirely. Possibly add creeping insanity as an effect that occurs within the mod irrespective of the food? Or even add in benefits for allowing your colonists to eat... Maybe a buff "touched by R'lyeh or something similar that boosts research by a bonus equal to your insanity. Both of those would give a reason to worry about the journals or strait jackets.

Wait, do all the Lovecraftian beasties' meat cause insanity? And not just the Star Vampires?

I feel like it should provide some benefit to cultists(from your other mod) or at least they should be used to it lol

@Banthor: That's a GREAT idea. I'll implement it as soon as I've upgraded to A16.

ha oh dear I just made a huge mistake... I was wondering why my puppies and chickens where going mad.

I've been feeding them strange meals as my colony is on a permanent winter world and I didn't have enough veggies for kibble. I wrote a long message about how this was a game breaker for me than I read this.

I got a chuckle out of that, @Planetfall. At least you can eat the puppies and chickens without going mad!
