Bees - feedback
Thank you for the awesome mod, wanted to leave some feedback.

The new bee genomes are amazing, I'm really engaged with breeding my super bees and I enjoy this aspect of bee-vamp. I’m looking forward to franchising into various biomes/species for optimal bees-ness. I am having one issue though, the bee queen lifespans don’t feel quite right at the moment They still seem way too brief. I’m saying this noting that they were recently doubled (according to change logs).

I’m still early in the apiary business so apologies if I’m missing some of the bigger picture stuff but my experience so far has been that it’s very demanding in terms of maintenance, and lines up with what was posted here:

When I last played Starbound FU it was pre-bee-vamp and I remember having a fairly zen experience with farming and setting up honey production. That’s just the kind of experience I enjoy when I’m playing at my base. Now it feels like I’m hopping between apiaries constantly trying to make sure I have the next bee generation “backups” and cycling out dying queens.

Please consider extending the current bee lifespan or removing the lifespan aspect all together. I understand the intention here and I liked the idea in theory, but during play I'm noticing that I'd rather suspend all my apiaries than risk my bees dying while I'm off dungeon delving. It has happened once already, I was on a mission, and they got wiped on my return. It’s kind of a bummer.

When I do leave my bees active, there is this ticking time bomb of bee death hanging over me, so I just don’t leave them active now. And that feels like it’s going against what was intended here? I don’t know for sure of course, maybe I’m just missing something.

If lifespan is here to stay/won’t be adjusted further, some other ideas on improving this experience:
• A codex entry for each species type, that details preferred biomes, rival bees etc. This could be unlocked the first time you scan a bee of that species. Like a pokedex, for bees! Suggesting this as it might help make it clearer to players why Bees might be dying fast.
• A "casual mode" apiary/frame type(s) which stops queen bees from dying due to lifespan but maybe with a trade off like massively lowering productivity and breeding. Basically provides the more casual beekeepers like myself a way to have functioning apiaries without the constant inventory management.

I do like the changes overall and breeding super bees feels rewarding, but yeah the lifespans feel like they are weighing down the experience for me. I love Frackin Universe and honestly can’t imagine Starbound without it, so thank you again for all the hard work.

The queen lifespan has already been more than quadrupled from where it was. In my opinion the lifespans are fine now after the last few passes.

The issue is misunderstanding how queens work now. You *want* them to die, so you can replace them with superior, newly breeded queens and consistently improve the bloodline. You are supposed to be breeding them for better types, improved lifespan etc, not getting one queen and producing forever with it.

That said, this is a consistent bit of feedback from many, so I'm investigating ways to adjust for it in the future.

There will be no bee codex to mention all the species. That's up to you to figure out, as intended! explore!

Thanks for the response :)

I’m going to give beekeeping another shot, taking on board what you said above. I’ll try not to worry about the queens dying, since I’m building up my stock of super drones which should help keep successors strong anyway. You're right in that some of this is just perception and grasping the concept. I am still in the early bee game and getting used to it.

That being said, I appreciate that you’re looking at ways to adjust this in the future. Perhaps another approach could be to stop drones from dying after the queen is gone? In this suggestion the drones would still be killed & replaced by a new queen. But since this is a player triggered action, at least there would be a pause until the player has had time to manage the apiaries.

My thinking is it could cater to more casual paces without compromising the depth of the experience. And the productivity of super beekeepers wouldn’t be impacted as they’ll continue to cycle bees at the pace they normally do.

Edit: Just a quick follow up; I played for a couple hours following your advice and am enjoying the experience a lot more.
