Stellaris

Star Trek: New Horizons
Value of stations when you no longer have choke-points?
I'm fairly new to the mod, so I don't understand all the new mechanics and changes, so I was hoping for some advice.

In my first game as Romulans, playing Alpha and Beta Quadrant map, I thought I was doing ok when the Federation, or alliance of Humans, Tellerites, Andorians and Vulcans declared war. I thought I was ready for them, as (thinking traditional Stellaris) that my battle station with defences close to their border would at least slow them down until my main fleet arrived. Nope. They cross over all over other star systems and completely swarm me from the Saurian territory next to me. I try and send my main fleet to engage, but it is just whack-a-mole at this point.

From reading the discussion board hyperlanes no longer exist and ships can just pretty much travel wherever. Is that right? If so, then this means creating battle stations at key choke-point is a pointless strategy in this game?

Apart from perhaps protecting your home system, and any other planetary system you deem worthy, is there any other point to them or strategy in using them? in BotF, which I know this mod draws inspiration from, Starbases not only protected the territory they were in but they helped project force, as they expanded your fleet range. Stellaris doesn't have the latter mechanic, so I can't see the value in them besides just protecting the one system they are in..

Finally, if choke points no longer exist what strategies are there to not be swarmed by enemy fleets when war breaks out? I appreciate each conflict is unique so forum users can't give specifics, but some general tips would be appreciated.

BTW, his isn't a criticism, as I understand no hyperlanes is in keeping with Star Trek lore. It is more I really want to get into this mod and just not get smashed by using ineffective tactics.

Thanks

As a rule of thumb, any system is connected to all the surround systems so for your border you have to build starbases in all your bordering systems, sometimes it even happen than two systems appear to have a large gap and there is a system in between that gap but futher back so it looks like isnt in the border, i usualy check the hyerlane connections by sending a ship to that system, pausing the game and trying to send it to the all surrounding systems (you need open boders with your neighbour to check the connections with his systems).
Later on, when the border isnt in effect (you annex/vassalise your neighbour) i transition those starbases to naval deposit to increase naval cap or trade hubs or just dismantle them to move the border defenses.

I also keep at least one fleet to cover the border with a starbase with shipyards just repair and stop any leaking when a war break out

In general you want the lest border surface just to safe in the amount of starbases you need to defense yourself but in case you dont want to invest in an array of border outpost i would recommend building only in the systems with planets, in case you are the UFP you can also go for the neutral zone option in the UFP event (keep in mind you can lose valuable border systems) or simply have a ton of vassals so in case of war they protect you and your territory while you focus on winning the war fastor trade hubs or they go and try to win the war while you hunt down enemy fleets.
Hope you find this helpfull :LLAP:

Basically you hit the nail on the head, defensive stations are for protecting key systems, and a fortified starbase in STNH is more than capable of fending off a fairly good sized fleet for quite some time... They're also very good at buffing defensive fleets in those systems...

Otherwise, the only way to not be swarmed by enemy fleets is to ensure you have comparable fleets of your own... Never neglect building your own fleet...

I also like to keep a couple fleets on whackamole duties, generally lighter ships with speed upgrades. Even if the AI starts with a fleet advantage they do a poor job of concentration of force the longer the war goes and you can generally mass superior firepower against any individual fleet. You can also use Starbases to funnel attacks - either the AI gets reamed by Starbases or comes through routes you expect.

The exact situation you described happened in my current Romulan playthrough. Pre UFP, a coalition of Earth, Vulcan, Tellarites, Andorians, Cheronites and Bolians hit me and outnumbered me at least 2-1. I let my Starbases and half my fleet hold the Andorian border while I curbstomped the Bolians, then concentrated on taking back systems that fell and ending the war.

I play on Grand Admiral/Extra challenge/tech slowdown.
