Play STNH on mac without the usual CTD with help of PlayOnMac app
Until Paradox Interactive has fixed the mac Stelllaris version regular CTD bugs that often occurs with big mods, you can avoid the regular CTD issues on mac by playing the windows version of Stellaris on mac with help of PlayOnMac and Wine.

1. Get PlayOnMac[www.playonmac.com]

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1454428217

2. Download PlayOnMac

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1454440079

3. Install PlayOnMac to your Applications folder

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1454443261

4. Start the PlayOnMac app

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1454450409

5. Allow the PlayOnMac app to be started for the first time through Security & Privacy

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1454448858

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1454454524

6. Start PlayOnMac again...

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1454450409

7. Install Steam

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1454457037

Go through the steps and let it install the fonts that is needed by Steam.

4. Start Steam and logon to your account

When starting Steam for the first time it can act weird a close down. Just start it again... be patient. Also, beware that Wine (PlayOnMac) has some issues showing webpages in Steam.

5. Configure Steam

You need to close down Steam and configure the config.vdf file to enable the option to download and install windows game on Steam.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1454468079

6. Edit config.vdf file

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1454469316

7. Add the CS data part after CM and save the config.vdf file

Copy the CS data string into the config.vdf file after the CM part. CS data string can be copied from here[bugs.winehq.org]

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1454528811

Save the file after the CS data string is copied into the config.vdf file after the CM part.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1454472935

8. Configure PlayOnMac Wine version

Set the Wine engine version to the latest one, I set the wine version to 3.13 that was latest one for me. You select the installed Steam application on PlayOnMac and click on 'Configure' button to be able to select/install a newer Wine version.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1454496554

9. Configure PlayOnMac Display Video Memory Size

Set your Video Memory Size based on your card. You can view the memory size of your graphic card by opening up the 'System Information' app and go to Graphics/Displays section

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1454499186

10. Enable OpenGL for Wine

Set Direct Draw Renderer to OpenGL

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1454500219

10. Enable multiple cpu threads

Click on the Registry Editor button and add the csmt dword data and set it to 1

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1454501000

9. Install Stellaris

Install Stellaris and all of the subscribed mod content shall be downloaded as well (subscribed mod content with help of your mac OS Steam app)

10. Configure Stellaris with Steam OpenGL start argument option

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1454508677

11. Set the graphics for Stellaris

If you have a high end graphic card, you can set graphics to highest setting. Otherwise set it to lowest quality. If the game might freeze for some reason, then go with the lowest quality setting no matter how great your high-end graphic card is, the Wine engine has it's limits.

Multisampling must be set to 0, bloom quality and lens flare turned off to get best performance.

High graphic setting

Low graphic setting

Save your new graphic quality settings and exit Stellaris.

12. Be sure that automatic graphics switching is turned off to get best performance

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1454556770

13. Start Stellaris with only the STNH main mod activated and no DLCs activated if you want the best performance, I strongly recommend that you run with just the STNH main mod activated to make sure it runs with so little lag as possible. Any of the STNH UI mods and the STNH submod is not needed to play STNH.

Enjoy!

One thing not covered in the above is the apparent need to install Quartz. When prompted, if you click the "install for me" option it just hangs there forever and does nothing. I had to manually go out to https://www.xquartz.org/releases/XQuartz-2.7.7.html and download it, then tell PlayOnMac to point to it. Then it installed just fine. I received an OSX alert saying that I needed to logout/backin before it would become active. Not sure if this was required for POM, but I did it anyway.

Click Configure -> select Steam -> click Wine -> click Registry Editor -> navigate to the area listed in the above picture, then right-click in the main window and select New DWORD value -> name it 'csmt' and assign a value of 1

After spending a good 2 hours getting the above setup to run, it's actually LESS stable under this setup than it was on my Mac. It started out crashing every 15-20 minutes, and now crashes every 5 minutes. The only difference is that under this setup I can reload, whereas on the mac-install I was unable to reload.

Does anyone have any advice that might help this setup run better? I already set all of the options to the lowest setting. Could having less than 15GB of drive space be affecting it? Would I be better off putting the whole POM setup on an empty USB3 32GB thumb-drive and playing it that way?

I've done everything on her but the game stops loading at 100% and won't finish any help?

The current stnh version only supports stellaris 2.1.3 niven version. Make sure you have properly reverted your game.
It just gets stuck on first time setup
I have to use the activity monitor to force quit the installation of Microsoft VC Redist every time, in order to get Stellaris to launch. Attempting manual installing seems to have changed nothing because the installer gets stuck itself.

Now that the new version of NH is out for the new Stellaris, if anyone has any success running it reliably and stably on a Mac natively, or in another environment, please post with the appropriate info!
As of 2.4.1 I can run the mod but run in trouble after a while. Basically at some point mid game game starts crashing with illegal command in thread 0 being listed as a cause. There is no fixed point where this starts happening, sometimes I can work around it for a while by loading an earlier save and apparently not triggering whatever seems to be the problem, but at some point I'll just run into a wall. Other than that game runs like a dream, playing on a 15" MBP 2015.

STNH works really good (no CTD anymore) on 64bit version of Stellaris on macOS Catalina (version 10.15), I have played it for hours without crash to desktop. It is not needed to run STNH on Windows Stellaris version on Wine on macOS anymore.
