That's what colitions of enemy nations are for.
Some things have changed recently and I will assume none of it is bugged except for perhaps the Harvester Casus Belli (if there is one, which I swear I saw something about this a number of patches ago).
The playstyle right now it seems tailored to (as far as I'm playing right now). To only build outposts around your unicomplex up to the number of Starbase capacity you have. Mainly do this to build more anchorages for more fleet or reactors for more energy.
The only casus belli available is the Assimilate CB. And only to empire bordering you.
It seems its still worth it to only harvest colonies until all unicomplexes are filled in order to consolidate research and unity benefits. How viable this is due to only being able to declare war on bordering empires, could render this questionable (I am testing this). I would imagine the playstyle to be to build up fleet to the max and build up unicomplexes enough to potentially be filled by all planets from an empire you border. Colony Harvest every planet. Supposedly after other empire should fill in that area. If not it's fine. Later on just fill the space with outposts only after all unicomplexes are filled.
Another suggestion if to get the ascension perk that gives +1 defense staion slot. And the higher hitpoints stations ascension slot. The +1 defense slot applies to not just starbases but to all outposts! This is big because a large annoyance with the borg or many other players. Is fleets just sweeping by your own fleets and having to chase them down often taking large amounts of time.
With every outpost having a defense platform this will incur considerable attrition to enemy fleets. Especially if there small. Even for large fleets they will slow them down and still cause damage over multiple engagements.
Due to only being able to declare war on neighboring empires. This fundamentaly changes my aforementioned strategy.
Now what I've found best is at the beginning. Expand with outposts moderately (not super aggressive). Build up sufficient fleet and always keep your starbases at cap, mostly build naval depots for more fleet. Build one additional Unicomplex.
Declare war on the Krenim after sufficient buildup. Only planet scoop there capital as it seems you assimilate just about every pop when planet scooping. Then assimilate every world the Krenim has.
It is not worth waiting for other empires to build closer to you, or to wait for them to colonize more worlds. The rate the AI colonizes worlds isn't worth the wait.
Now rinse and repeat the aforementioned process with the Krenim. Just with all other surounding empires.
The following here is the second turtle/tall gradual expansion playstyle.
Put the setting at 5x habitable planets, and aggressive AI (personal preference) as the 5x habitable planets give a sense of a bigger galaxy without adding more stars, and all those uninhabibitable planets don't matter much. This gives more opportunities for the AI to colonize, which means more opportunity for the Borg to assimilate and planet scoop nearby worlds.
Only put outposts in surrounding systems up to the cap of your spaceports.
Planet scoop all nearby colonized planets, even better when there in coaltions which means more distant targets to planet scoop.
Leave one planet untouched in order for them to recolonize; I've found that usually they will relatively quickly recolonize the worlds that were scooped.
Or you can scoop all enemy worlds and let other empires fill in the space.
If it takes an unreasonable amount of time for the space to be filled in. Expand yourself up to there borders. then planet scoop more nearby empires.
Keep doing this even past filling unicomplexes. Only conquer new worlds preferably close. And planet scoop worlds to fill your planets.
This style of play will be very slow expansion of borders. But it solves the problem of having many worlds with a couple or a few drones (pops) on them, which is the main downside of the aggressive expansion style of play. It's a problem since these mostly empty worlds contribute to higher tech and unity costs.
As well as keeping your borders together, tight, and fortified. Recommend the +1 defense platform perk and added hull to starbases/defense platforms perk.
Later on add transwarp gates to all unicomplexes, and assimilated worlds. It's easier to fullfil this goal since resources are concentrated more and all worlds filled. Justifying the investment.
With the extra defenses and transwarp gates. You have a near impenetrable defense. Which will be helpful against the Undine (species 8472) mind I haven't reached this far into the playthrough.
Assimilate worlds closest to your border. And planet scoop to fill up those assimilated worlds and your starting unicomplex. Then later building a second unicomplex in the Gamma quadrant. and your 3rd in the alpha/beta quadrant.
This keeps true to the tall/turtle strategy I described in posts before this. And having moderate expansion instead of aggressive expansion. As well as less aggravating waits for neighboring empires to colonize worlds. As your moderate expansion is bringing your borders closer to new empires/species to assimilate for that Unity bonus.
And standart thrusters are the best for the Borg ant the beginning! I really love this mod and I'm a HUGHe Borg fan, keep it up!
Borg cannot colonize, so it's not possible to get those 40% for Domination Victory. There is one other civ in the game (Undine), which I can't conquer.
Has anyone else this problem?
I have all the materials to build one but the last material that looks like a bunch of bubbles does not show up in any of my materials in industry. Not sure on how to get them in matter to make the cube.
