How to translate RPC
This discussion has been made to help other translators do their job

I'm making Russian localization for the Roshpit Chanpions, so first of all I must to say that the first translation of the entire text is the most difficult. Then it will be easier to do updates.

What do you need:
  • Willpower - Today Roshpit Champions have over 9.7k rows of text, that wait to be translated.
  • GCFScape - Program to extract original addon_english.txt Nem's tools download page[nemesis.thewavelength.net]
  • Notepad++ or similar text editor
If you have all of those options - let's begin!

How to start:
  • Launch your GCFScape.
  • In GCFScape hit CTRL+O and open .. \ steamapps \ workshop \ content \ 570 \ 469311655 \ 469311655.vpk.
  • Go to the / root / resource / folder then find and extract filehttp://imgur.com/TUeatKD.
  • Make the copy of this file and rename the copy like "addon_LANGUAGENAME.txt", depending on the language in which you will create the translation. For example: "addon_russian.txt", "addon_swedish.txt" or "addon_romanian.txt" etc.
  • Start translating
  • Change the 3rd row ("Language" "English") to your language name.
  • Translate the text in second quotes in every possible line except for the skills, runes, weapons, items and glyph names, because its better for community.
  • Make sure, that all quotes are at their place or your file will be broken in the game.

When you'll done, upload yout localization file to somewhere like Google Drive and send the link to ChalkyBrush.

Translation update:
Now you should have another one program, that can help you find the difference between updates.
I use "TextDiff[www.angusj.com]" because its easy and useful, but you can find Notepad++ plugin with same potential.
  • Rename old addon_english.txt to something like "000addon_english.txt"
  • Launch GCFScape and open again *.vpk file, extract new addon_english.txt
  • Rename new addon_english to something like "001addon_english.txt"
Now you can compare both files. Start TextDiff and hit "File - Open file 1" or CTRL+1, then open old "000addon_english.txt"
After that hit "File - open file 2" or CTRL+2 and open new "001addon_english.txt" file.
Then you should hit "Actions - Compare" or "F9" button and click on down arrow icon to move to the next difference[imgur.com].
Remember the row number. Open your old translation and new addon_english.txt in notepad++, on your file make right click and hit "Move to other view[imgur.com]"
After that, click on two locks[imgur.com] for lock horizontal and vertical synchronize of both text fields
Find the row, that TextDiff showed us and make the change.

When you've done with all changes, save file and upload to the same place as before and send link to ChalkyBrush

Tips:
  • All modifiers tooltips, that starts like DOTA_Tooltip_modifier_... should have "%%" after the number
(e.g.: "DOTA_Tooltip_modifier_voltex_rune_b_a_description" "Your attacks have a 15%% chance to unleash a powerful Chain Lightning")
But sometimes you can see 3 percent signs in a row, because %property_#% have their own "%"
(e.g.: "DOTA_Tooltip_modifier_ivory_gryffin_aura_effect_Description" "Magic and Pure damage reduced by %property_two%%%")
  • In main abilities descriptions you can use some HTML tags like <font color='#70EA72'></font> or <br>.
  • In items descriptions you can also use <br> tag to start from a new line.
  • If you need to make new line in main abilities, use \n tag without any quote.
  • If you need to add quotes into translation, use single 'quotes' instead of "double"

This guide can be updated soon.

Thanks for the guide. One last thing though... How do I know if anyone else is already working on the translation or not?

It would be nice to know whether the game recognizes Unicode or not. Maybe you should also add that to the guide.

hi guys,

I gonna care about the German Translation ;)

I came to line 2600 so far and got some common questions.
It's about using of words and their meaning (syntax & semantics).
I want to avoid mistakes in translations based on unknown structures, so please take a look here and answer or discuss suggestions:

Part 1:
Quote: "Translate the text in second quotes in every possible line except for the skills, runes, weapons, items and glyph names, because its better for community."
1) Shall the names of consumables, keys and units also be unchanged?
2) Some skills give buffs/debuffs or charges (shown in status bar) with the same name of the skill so shall their names also be unchanged?
3) Sometimes it would be very helpful to also see translated names, mainly for the players who needs/wants translation.
Am I allowed to let the original english name untouched but just add the translation afterwards, maybe by using (brackets)?

4) In some spell descriptions are the words fully written in capital letter like "DAMAGE" instead of "Damage". Is this only for main skills (basic abilities) and why?
5) sometimes duration values are given in "seconds" or just "s", does it matter? would it be better to just use "s" everywhere to shorten descriptions?
6) What is about using font color more often e.g. for EVERY corresponding element in the descriptions, or another color/highlight for duration or such things? Do this need to be done in english first?

Part 2:
1) What's the difference and meaning of following words: "skills", "main skills", "abilities", "basic abilities", runes... ? Currently I made this overview for me:
basic ability: "active" = Q, W, E, R
runes: "passive" = Q1-4, W1-4, E1-4, R1-4
ability: both together
...so what are skills or even main skills? Is "skills" actually used as synonym for "abilities"?
main skills = basic ability (active)
runes = rune ability (passive)
skills = abilities (all?)
glyphes = glyphe ability (special) etc.

2) Are "any", "every", "all" (e.g. ... damage) synonymes? Since "ALL" means calculation with post-mitigation, "all" should not be used at all but "any"/"every", don't you think so?
3) Are "stats" more than just "attributes" or synonymes?
4) Are "decrease" & "loss" , "reduction" & "resistance" (drain, remove) as well as "increase" & "enhance", "bonus" & "addition" (restore, gain) synonymes or categorised?
5) What's the difference between "attack damage" and "attack power" corresponding to "basic attack damage" and "bonus attack damage"?
What is the right structure: {attack power} = [attack damage] = (basic attack damge) + (bonus attack damage) or
{attack power} = {[attack damage] + [added damage]} = {[(basic attack damage) + (bonus attack damage)] + [(damage added from items) + (damage added from abilities)]}?

6) What's about "Pool (of Eternity)", "stash" and "bank"? Is "bank" only for keys, "pool" only for items and "stash" for champions or synonymes?
7) Do players get the "Premium Status" by the "Game Pass" or do they need to activate the "web premium" features?
8) Should all words "hero" be changed to "champion"?
9) Am I allowed to change "buff" to "charge" if it fits, just to have better translations and logical recognition?
Overall "buff" or "debuff" should be a status effect without stacks (I would translate "buff" to ger.:"Verstärkung", which actually means "amplification")
and "charge" is made for stackable buffs, if you understand (I would translate "stacks" and "charges" both to ger.:"Aufladungen").
This would also skip whether call it buff or debuff and help to understand the status bar (not just buff/debuff bar)
e.g. Astral Ranger [W4] Cluster Arrow says "debuff" (no name) and "stacks". I would not call that debuff/buff but just say that it gives stackable charges.
So the name of the debuff is now just the name of the charge stack, in this case "Cluster Arrow charges" (debuff was called just "Cluster Arrow")
In the description of such status effects with stackable charges should stay explanations corresponding to effect "per charge" and not "per stack"...
