Please verify that you are on the most recent version, v0.2.14. It will be shown in the in-game watermark to the bottom right.

If you can reproduce this reliably, find a npc, close down the game, and check %userprofile%\Zomboid\console.txt for errors. If you find any, please post them here.
If not, then start up the game and check the same file, %userprofile%\Zomboid\console.txt, while the game is running for errors. If you find any, please post them here.
